Job Description

Purpose: Under general supervision, provides special education services to students identified as disabled in accordance with state and federal regulations who are following adapted curriculum (extensions to the common core). The EC teacher is responsible for developing lesson plans, adapting materials, and designing activities to assist EC students develop appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills and to meet their IEP goals. The teacher is responsible for monitoring students’ progress and for maintaining EC records in compliance with state and federal guidelines.

Qualifications
  • Education: Degree in special education and certification in adapted curriculum by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as laptops, iPads, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs. Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects with negligible force. Physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work.
  • Data Conception: Ability to compare and judge observable data characteristics.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, receive instructions, and follow directions.
  • Language Ability: Ability to read various correspondence and prepare simple reports and instructional materials.
  • Intelligence: Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Numerical Aptitude: Ability to use mathematical formulas, perform arithmetic, and apply descriptive statistics.
  • Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for proper dimensions.
  • Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate hand and eye movements quickly and accurately.
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle a variety of office equipment and hand tools.
  • Color Discrimination: Ability to differentiate between colors and shades.
  • Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to handle people beyond instructions, adapt under stress, and respond to emergencies.
  • Physical Communication: Ability to talk, hear, and communicate via telephone.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities: monitor safety, motivate students, maintain clean environment, perform clerical duties, maintain order, operate office machines, maintain files, follow instructions, establish effective working relationships.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement instructional plans compatible with school and system-wide curricular goals and students’ IEPs.
  • Develop and implement Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities; use diagnostic information to update IEPs.
  • Provide direct special education instruction.
  • Employ a variety of teaching methods, adapting or developing materials as needed.
  • Monitor student behavior, maintain discipline, deescalate inappropriate behaviors, teach behavioral strategies, restrain students when necessary, record and report restraints.
  • Assist students with personal and self-help needs such as eating and toileting.
  • Communicate with parents via periodic written progress reports.
  • Act as case coordinator for assigned students; consult with community caregivers, school support professionals, and parents.
  • Maintain student records in accordance with North Carolina’s procedures and federal statutes.
  • Treat all students fairly, interact effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and community.
  • Follow a professional development plan and demonstrate evidence of growth.
