Job summary

The City of Brooklyn Center, MN is seeking part-time set crew/custodians to perform routine cleaning and event setup under the direction of the Operations Director. Responsibilities

  • Set up facility rooms as directed by Operations Director and Crew Chief, including staging, dance floor, audio/visual, and equipment.
  • Set up rooms for conferences, lectures and special events.
  • Distribute and manage waste disposal; maintain cleanliness of restrooms, lockers, and common areas.
  • Clean floors, dust, mop, scrub tile surfaces, windows, walls and ceilings; polish and maintain fixtures.
  • Shovel snow and perform basic grounds maintenance as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support city facilities.

Job description

The set crew/custodians work various shifts under the direction of the Operations Director. This position includes routine manual labor associated with the set-up of various events and the daily cleaning of buildings. Employees in this position perform various duties requiring moderate physical strength. This position includes recurring but non-routine cleaning and maintenance of buildings. This work is normally, but not always, of the project type nature.

We will be filling a couple part-time vacancies at this time and will use the list of qualified candidates for 3 months to fill additional vacancies as needed.

General
  • Responsible for set-up of facility rooms as directed by the Operations Director and/or Crew Chief, including staging, dance floor, audio/visual, and miscellaneous equipment.
  • Sets up rooms for conferences, lectures and special events.
  • Discards trash from waste receptacles.
  • Dust mops, sweeps, and wet mops.
  • Uses floor scrubber and buffer on all tile floor and wall areas.
  • Spot cleans rugs and carpets.
  • Scrubs and cleans rest room and locker room fixtures and keeps rest rooms supplied with towels, soap and other items.
  • Dusts and cleans walls, doors, woodwork, and other above floor surfaces.
  • Keeps janitor’s supply closet and cleaning equipment clean.
  • Cleans windows.
  • Washes walls, vents and ceilings.
  • Vacuums and washes light fixtures.
  • Washes waste receptacles.
  • Cleans carpets with extractor or shampoo machine.
  • Shovels snow.
  • Does gardening.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
  • Currently enrolled in High School OR
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Ability to speak, read or write any language other than English, including sign language.
Communications

Must be able to read and understand correspondence, memoranda, and directives, and follow such directives. Ability to read labeling on products in accordance with safety regulations. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with persons who do not speak English and are from a variety of different cultures.

Technical Knowledge

Must have working knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment. Ability to perform manual tasks requiring moderate physical strength. Ability to operate mechanical cleaning equipment.

Physical Abilities

Must have the ability to frequently lift objects up to 35 pounds from floor to shoulder height. Must occasionally lift over 35 to 75 pounds from floor to waist. Must be able to infrequently lift items from floor to shoulder height that weigh up to 100 pounds. In order to complete the essential duties, this position requires constant standing, walking, bending, stooping, crawling, reaching above shoulder level and away from body, kneeling, twisting, turning, accurate balance, pushing, pulling, and lifting on a regular basis. Must be able to use hands for simple and firm grasping frequently; occasionally for fine manipulation. Must have the ability to read and discern visual images and written documentation. May work with a wide variety of equipment essential to complete assigned duties. Frequently uses chemicals in all areas of work. Ability to work varied schedule as assigned.
