Job description

Earthwork & Grading Foreman

Independence Excavating is seeking an Earthwork & Grading Foreman to join our expanding team. This role involves overseeing and executing assigned projects, directing employees' daily tasks, and managing all daily paperwork, including employee and equipment schedules, production tracking, dust logs, safety logs, etc. The position requires experience with technology such as an iPad and/or basic laptop skills.

A typical day looks like:

  • Working with the superintendent to build earthwork crews and develop a plan for site earthwork in coordination with utility crews or other contractors on site.
  • Implementing plans to meet project schedule and budget, including setting up cuts and fills, planning haul routes, maintaining haul roads, and working with inspectors to ensure fills meet specifications.
  • Rough and fine grading to meet project specifications.
  • Recording and tracking production quantities and comparing them to estimated costs to meet or exceed profit margins.
  • Scheduling employees and equipment with the superintendent to ensure high utilization rates.
  • Communicating with vendors and subcontractors related to earthwork and grading, such as aggregate suppliers or blasting subcontractors.
  • Maintaining knowledge of plans, specifications, contractual requirements, and schedules, and communicating progress or issues to the superintendent and project manager.
  • Ensuring safety for all on-site personnel by complying with OSHA and company safety policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Do you have what it takes?

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Five or more years of heavy civil construction experience.
  • Strong verbal communication skills for interacting with employees, co-workers, and inspectors.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing timekeeping, equipment, quantities, and schedules.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to lead, motivate, and maintain a harmonious work environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret grading plans, specifications, and geotechnical data.
  • Experience with various equipment spreads, from trucks to heavy machinery like Cat 777 and D11 dozers.
  • Experience with grade checking using GPS, lasers, stakes, and cut sheets.
  • Basic knowledge of forecasting and measuring production rates.
  • Basic knowledge of GPS grading equipment.
  • Basic understanding of drilling and blasting in earthwork.
