Job summary

City of Fairhope is seeking a sanitation worker to support refuse and recycling collection. Incumbents perform manual tasks, operate collection equipment, and assist with route planning and safety compliance. This role requires physical labor, valid driving credentials, and flexibility for early hours and travel when needed.

Work involves lifting, route driving, and assisting with barricades for events, with opportunities to contribute to recycling efforts and community services.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 6 months of experience in equipment operation and/or manual labor.
• Current valid driver’s license; must be insurable.
• Ability to obtain Class B CDL within 1 year of employment.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and initial drug screen.
• Ability to work non-standard hours and travel.

Responsibilities

• Perform manual lifting; load trash carts, recycle bins and heavy materials.
• Transport, load, and unload materials and equipment used in daily operations.
• Assist drivers and direct traffic to facilitate safe pickups.
• Conduct daily vehicle inspections and report mechanical issues.
• Deliver new or replacement recycle bins to customers and support route efficiency.
