Job description

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.

JOB GOAL

To facilitate student comprehension and application of concepts, skills and behaviors that contribute to the development of mature, able and responsible members of society. To ensure continuous improvement in state and national performance levels to prepare students for college and careers in a global society, and at every level, performance is on-track and on-time for success.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Ability to implement 21st Century Skills into the curriculum.
  • Ability to work a full duty day in the location or locations assigned.
  • Assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, student outcomes, and Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instruction/learning strategies and activities compatible with the physical facility and the needs of the students.
  • Manage the behavior of learners in the classroom and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the site.
  • Communicate to students and parents instructional expectations, student progress or lack of progress.
  • Assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation.
  • Participate in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods, and curriculum with other program personnel.
  • Engage in professional growth and development activities including staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Document student progress by maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
  • Ensure that the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities as requested by the principal.
  • Participate as a regular teacher in IEP meetings for IDEA students.
  • Possess good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of instructional specialty.
  • Maintain knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade assigned.
  • Stay updated with current research and theory.
  • Plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and peers.
  • Demonstrate skilled and effective oral and written communication.
  • Exhibit excellent human relations skills.
  • Possess the physical and emotional ability to perform required work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Take attendance and keep attendance registers according to Board policy.
  • Follow Section 504 and IDEA amendments.
  • Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor at all times.
  • Keep a neat and professional appearance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

COMMUNICATION/ORGANIZATION: Maintain communication with school personnel and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action to meet the educational needs of students.

REASONING ABILITY: Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Read, analyze, and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Write reports, general curriculum, and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols.

SALARY: Certified Salary Schedule

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policy.
