Job Description

Head Start programs prepare America’s most vulnerable young children to succeed in school and in life beyond school. The SIUE Head Start program currently has multiple immediate Early Childhood Teacher Assistant vacancies for the 2023-2024 academic year.

The SIUE Head Start/Early Head Start Program is committed to engaging children and families with highly qualified staff who support children's achievement and family well-being. Teacher Assistants support classroom teachers in welcoming children from diverse backgrounds, creating a safe and nurturing environment that promotes emotional and social growth, and providing a rigorous school readiness experience. Responsibilities include supporting instructional plans, engaging children—including those with special needs—promoting positive behavior, facilitating developmental screenings and assessments, and participating in home visits and parent-teacher conferences.

Position Details
  • Head Start Teacher Assistant positions are nine-month (August - May), full-time roles serving children aged three to five years.
  • Early Head Start Teacher Assistant positions are twelve-month, full-time roles serving children from six weeks to thirty-six months.
  • Locations include Belleville, Cahokia, Caseyville, East St. Louis, Lebanon, and Lovejoy, Illinois. Final center assignments will be based on program needs.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate degree or higher in Early Childhood Education or Child Development, OR
  • Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or equivalent, OR
  • Currently enrolled in an early childhood program with at least 50% of coursework completed, demonstrating active enrollment and progress each semester.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching preschool-aged children
  • Experience working with diverse populations and team collaboration
  • Physical ability to perform floor exercises and bending/kneeling activities
