Job Purpose

The Substitute Associate Teacher will be under general supervision of assigned locations. They will be responsible for the care and instruction of pre-school children, promoting their social, physical, and mental development. They will supervise children, support classroom lesson planning and implementation, serve meals, and ensure a healthy and safe learning environment.

Position Responsibilities
  • Work with program staff in planning and implementing classroom lessons
  • Conduct meetings and conferences with parents
  • Coordinate activities and events for children and parents
  • Interact with the public and provide customer service via phone, email, and in person
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, records, and other paperwork required by the program
Essential Duties
  • Share teaching responsibilities with a Teacher I or II
  • Supervise children at the site
  • Conduct safety checks and maintain a safe environment
  • Prepare snacks and meals, and sanitize food areas
  • Assist children with hygiene and diapering as needed
  • Help plan and execute lessons and activities
  • Conduct teacher-parent conferences and home visits
  • Assist in developmental assessments of children
  • Support developmental screenings and ongoing assessments (e.g., DRDP-2015 IT, ASQ-3, ASQ: SE-2)
  • Interpret for parents who do not speak English, as needed
  • Support meal prep and dishwashing
  • Perform diaper changes as needed
  • Maintain attendance and achievement records
  • Set up classrooms and organize supplies
  • Willing to travel to various locations (minimum 10 miles)
Requirements

Qualifications: Responsible adult with passion for working with children, team-oriented, positive attitude, good organizational and communication skills. Basic computer skills desirable.

Experience: 6 months to 1 year working with pre-school children, preferably in Head Start. Must be at least 18 years old and have a Department of Justice clearance to work with children, associated with California Community Care Licensing.

Education: Minimum of 12 ECE/CD units; AA degree or higher with 12 units preferred.

Licenses/Permits: CPR/First Aid, valid driver’s license with insurance or reliable transportation, DOJ clearance.

Special Requirements: TB test within past 6 months, health screen clearance every 2 years, immunizations (Measles, Pertussis, Influenza), COVID vaccination, physical demands as described.

Physical Demands

The role requires the ability to perform physical activities such as standing, sitting, kneeling, crawling, lifting up to 25 lbs, and outdoor supervision. Reasonable accommodations can be made for disabilities.
