Early Childhood Special Education Teacher

Job Overview

Under the direction of the school principal, the special education teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in various educational settings. The role involves creating a flexible program that offers specialized instruction, ensuring students benefit from the general education curriculum with support such as aides, accommodations, and other resources.

Responsibilities
  1. Provide instructional support to students in a positive environment.
  2. Employ specialized strategies to develop sensory, perceptual-motor, language, cognition, and memory skills.
  3. Instruct students using techniques like phonetics, multi-sensory learning, and repetition to meet diverse needs.
  4. Teach socially acceptable behaviors based on students' IEPs, employing positive behavioral support techniques.
  5. Modify curricula for students with disabilities using various instructional techniques and technologies.
  6. Plan and conduct instructional activities that encourage observation, questioning, and investigation.
  7. Establish behavior rules and procedures to maintain a conducive learning environment.
  8. Meet with parents to discuss progress and educational priorities.
  9. Collaborate with professionals to develop and implement IEPs.
  10. Maintain accurate student records and prepare required reports.
  11. Set clear objectives for lessons and communicate them effectively.
  12. Develop communication and monitoring plans for inclusive classrooms.
  13. Provide crisis intervention when needed.
  14. Assist in data collection for interventions and reporting requirements.
  15. Participate in multidisciplinary teams and professional development activities.
  16. Perform any other related duties as required.
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in an approved special education program, or equivalent, with eligibility for Virginia Collegiate Professional License.

Experience: Relevant training and experience may substitute for formal qualifications.

Physical and Other Requirements

Ability to communicate effectively, perform physical tasks including supporting individuals with disabilities, and possess a valid driver's license. Regular attendance is essential.
