Job description

Early Childhood Special Education Teacher/Coordinator

RSU 26 is looking for a full-time Early Childhood Special Education Teacher/Coordinator with Maine State Certification as a Teacher of Exceptional Students (282B) to help launch our early childhood (3 & 4 Year Old) special education program. This position will be responsible for the evaluation, as well as coordination, and delivery of services for identified students. Experience working with children who have emotional, learning, developmental, and behavioral challenges is desired. Some summer work time is required for this position.

Candidates will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) regulations in our commitment to Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to students ages 3 to 4 years old with disabilities in being educated within their Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).

Essential Requirements:

  • Special Education Certification (282) (282B preferred; willingness to obtain 282B will be considered)
  • Knowledge and understanding of Maine Unified Special Education Regulations (MUSER)
  • Experience in consulting regarding special education with teachers, providers, and families of young children

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate screenings and evaluations throughout the school year to determine eligibility through Child Find and observe students in the referral process.
  • Assist IEP teams in developing instructional techniques, including appropriate strategies, interventions, collaboration, accommodations, and modifications to support instruction within the student's least restrictive environment (LRE).
  • Complete Written Notices for IEP meetings. Review IEPs to ensure compliance with state regulations. Oversee tracking systems and timelines for special education paperwork to ensure compliance with state regulations.
  • Support the Part C to Part B transition process to public schools for incoming 3-year-olds—complete case management responsibilities as necessary for students outside the public school setting to meet state regulations.
  • Support the coordination and scheduling of service providers in the community settings and the schools to ensure the delivery of services.
  • Implement specially designed instruction in collaboration with the other members of the student’s team.
  • Act as a liaison between parents, teachers, service providers, and other stakeholders to foster communication.
