The Passage of Hope Program provides transitional residential care and other supportive services to Unaccompanied Children (UC) who are under legal custody of the Federal Government. Working in collaboration with the Federal Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), our program provides a safe and nurturing environment for youth in our Basic Shelter and Transitional and Long Term Foster Care programs located at our licensed residential facilities and foster homes throughout New York City and Westchester County. While in our care we search, assess, and provide connections with family members and/or other potential sponsors in the United States, so they can move forward with their lives and thrive. In all programs, we provide therapeutic and educational services and other supports that youth need to achieve success through an array of strength-based and targeted interventions.

The Teaching Assistant will assist the Teacher in creating, reviewing, and implementing the academic curriculum in accordance with the NYS State Education guidelines for ages 0 to 17.

What You'll Do
  • Assist the Teacher in developing lesson plans and curriculum for all assigned youth, ensuring they meet developmental needs, are in their native language, and promote learning in English, Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Physical Education, Social Studies, and Acculturation.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Refugee Resettlement and other bodies to ensure compliance with ORR standards related to educational needs.
  • Ensure youth receive specialized, differentiated, and individualized educational and tutorial services in collaboration with supervisors and other departments.
  • Create and facilitate educational activities and hands-on projects to enhance lesson plans.
  • Maintain inventory of educational supplies and ensure the program is well-equipped.
  • Facilitate assessments for minors within 72 hours of arrival and every 90 days afterward.
  • Participate in committees, professional development, and training to improve educational practices and ensure compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bilingual/Multilingual proficiency.
  • At least one year of classroom teaching experience with youth facing behavioral, educational, and emotional challenges.
  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field preferred.
  • Pathway towards NYS Department of Education teaching certificates (Teaching Assistant Level I or higher) preferred.
  • Pathway towards credentials for Bilingual Education, ESOL, or ENL classes preferred.
  • Pathway to a master's degree in education or related field preferred.

Work Environment: Field, Classrooms, and POH Educational Services Sites

Position Type/Hours: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 7:30 am - 3:30 pm.

Additional Requirements
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Ability to work in-person in NYC at least 3 days a week.
  • Willingness to travel to other Rising Ground sites if required.
