Job summary

YMCA in Kankakee, IL seeks an Early Childhood Teacher to support the YMCA Childcare Center’s mission by planning engaging lessons, maintaining a safe classroom, and guiding a team of assistants. The role emphasizes parent communication and program adherence to health, safety, and licensing standards.

You will work with children ages birth to five, implementing developmentally appropriate activities and building strong relationships with families and the community.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED, or 1–3 months related experience and/or training.
• Must be at least 19 years old.
• 60 semester hours from an accredited college/university with 6 hours in childcare from birth to age six, or 1 year of child development experience + 30 semester hours, or a qualifying CDA.
• CPR, First Aid & AED, child abuse prevention, bloodborne pathogens, and new employee orientation required upon hire.
• Excellent interpersonal and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to lead and relate effectively to diverse groups in the community.
• Medical release + negative TB test results and MMR immunization may be required.
• DCFS background check and fingerprinting if necessary; references and Gateways to Opportunity.
• Mandated reporter training and ECERS/ITERS training within specified timelines.

Responsibilities

• Plan and lead day-to-day lesson plans aligned with curriculum.
• Create a safe, structured, nurturing environment following licensing guidelines.
• Provide individual support and positive behavior guidance.
• Lead, train, and support assistant teachers; delegate tasks.
• Maintain staff-child ratios with active supervision.
• Assist in marketing and distribution of program information.
• Operate program within pre-determined budget and safety standards.
• Develop relationships with parents; communicate daily and via Brightwheel.
• Organize and deliver special events for families; keep records tidy.
