Job summary

Hastings Public Schools' Hastings Community Education is seeking substitute School Readiness/Early Childhood Program Assistants to support our early childhood programs. Substitute hours are flexible and will vary based on staffing needs.

This role works with young children in a caring learning environment, assisting teachers, supervising activities, and helping with daily routines, meals, transitions, and safety. Starting wage is $18.00 per hour; substitutes are not eligible for benefits.

Qualifications

• Basic knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practices.
• Warmth, patience, enthusiasm, and respect when relating to young children.
• Ability to actively supervise children and maintain a safe environment.
• Follow teacher directions and communicate effectively with staff and students.

Responsibilities

• Assist teachers with classroom activities, learning experiences and daily routines.
• Provide active supervision of children throughout the program day.
• Support children in developing social, emotional and independence skills.
• Assist during transitions, meals/snacks, toileting and other routines.
• Prepare, organize and clean classroom materials and spaces.
• Follow health, safety and emergency procedures.
• Work cooperatively with teachers, program staff and families.
• Maintain confidentiality and professional communication.
• Report to work on time and complete assigned hours.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

General Information

Hastings Community Education is seeking substitute Early Childhood Assistants to support our early childhood programs as staffing needs arise. Substitute hours are flexible and will vary depending on program needs and staff absences.

This position works with young children in a welcoming, caring and engaging learning environment. Early Childhood Assistants support classroom activities, routines, supervision and the social-emotional development of children while working collaboratively with teachers and other program staff.

Reporting Relationships

Works under the general supervision of the Early Childhood Supervisor and receives daily work direction from classroom teachers and program staff.

Responsibilities

• Assist teachers with classroom activities, learning experiences and daily routines.
• Provide active supervision of children throughout the program day.
• Support children positively in developing social, emotional and independence skills.
• Assist children during transitions, meals/snacks, toileting and other daily routines as appropriate.
• Prepare, organize and clean classroom materials and learning spaces.
• Follow established health, safety and emergency procedures.
• Work cooperatively and collaboratively with teachers, program staff and families.
• Maintain confidentiality and professional communication.
• Report to work on time and complete assigned hours.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
