Job summary

WSP is seeking an Early Career Substation Mechanical Engineer for our Billings, MT office. You will support the Billings Substation Team in detailing and designing HV substations and related components, contributing to project deliverables with a focus on quality and client satisfaction.

Ideal candidates have a BS in mechanical engineering or related field, 0-1 year of experience, and strong English communication.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed design of low to extra-high voltage substations including one-line diagrams and station layouts.
  • Develop cable and conduit plans, ground grid design, foundation and structural plans.
  • Design control enclosure, lightning protection, and yard lighting plans; prepare Bills of Materials.
  • Support QA/QC for deliverables and adhere to project standards and client requirements.
  • Learn and adhere to client standards and processes; complete training on tasks.

The Early Career Substation Mechanical Engineer will share responsibility with the rest of the department to produce a product consistent with WSP's mission statement and our culture. Your Impact
  • Perform the detailed design of low to extra-high voltage substations including, but not limited to:
    • One-line diagrams
    • Station physical layouts
    • Sections/Elevations
    • Cable and conduitplans and details
    • Ground grid design and details
    • Foundation plans and details
    • Structuralplans and details
    • Control enclosure design and details
    • Lightning protection plans
    • Yard lighting plans
    • Bills of Materials
  • Support QA/QC for deliverables to clients
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Shall learn, understand, and adhere to client standards and processes while working individually or within a team to complete complex and technically challenging designs
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • BSME (BS Mechanical Engineering) or BSMET (BS Mechanical Engineering Technology) degree, from an accredited university.
  • 0-1 years of experience
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of mechanical engineering to build on.
  • Candidates should enjoy living in the Billings area, or have a desire and ability to relocate there with minimal assistance.
  • Strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel.
  • Legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3+ months of relevant Mechanical engineering work experience; could be on an internship or co-op basis
  • Minimum 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Knowledge of electrical utility substations and familiarity with substation design
  • Engineer In Training certificate (EIT) or passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
