Job summary

WSP is seeking an Entry-Level Substation Electrical Engineer for our Saint Louis, MO office. You will contribute to the Power Delivery Substation Team, assisting in the design of low to extra-high voltage substations and related deliverables.

The role emphasizes learning, collaboration, and adherence to quality standards, with opportunities to work on site and with clients. Ideal for graduates with strong fundamentals and a desire to grow in power engineering.

Qualifications

  • BSEE or BSEET degree from an accredited university, power option preferred.
  • Strong command of English with good written and oral communication.
  • Willing to relocate to St. Louis, MO with minimal assistance.
  • U.S. work authorization without sponsorship.
  • 0–1 year of professional experience in electrical engineering.
  • Travel may be required on a project basis.

Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed design of substations, including one-line diagrams and schematics.
  • Produce wiring diagrams, SCADA, and communication layouts.
  • Develop station layouts, grounds, foundations, and electrical details.
  • Support QA/QC for client deliverables and adhere to codes.
  • Engage in site visits and coordinate with project teams.
  • Learn client standards and processes on complex designs.

The Entry Level Substation Electrical Engineer will share responsibility with the rest of the department to produce a product consistent with WSP's mission statement and our culture. They are expected to support the department in achieving the goals of the department, maintain WSP's high-quality standards, promote internal teamwork and meet the needs of our clients.

Your Impact
  • Perform the detailed design of low to extra-high voltage substations including, but not limited to:
    • One-line diagrams
    • Schematics
    • Wiring diagrams
    • SCADA
    • Communications
    • Station physical layouts
    • Sections/Elevations
    • Cable and conduitplans and details
    • Ground grid design and details
    • Foundation plans and details
    • Structuralplans and details
    • Control enclosure design and details
    • Lightning protection plans
    • Yard lighting plans
    • Bills of Materials
    • Site visits
  • Support QA/QC for deliverables to clients
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Shall learn, understand, and adhere to client standards and processes while working individually or within a team to complete complex and technically challenging designs.
  • The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of transmission line design for new lines, relocations, upgrades, and fiber optic additions.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • BSEE (BS Electrical Engineering) or BSEET (BS Electrical Engineering Technology) degree, from an accredited university preferably with a power option
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of electrical engineering to build on
  • Candidates should enjoy living in the St Louis area, or have a desire and ability to relocate there with minimal assistance
  • Must have a strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with internal team members and external client personnel
  • Must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
  • 0-1 years of experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least three months of relevant electrical engineering work experience; could be on an internship or co-op basis
  • Minimum 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Knowledge of electrical utility substations and familiarity with substation design
  • Engineer In Training certificate (EIT) or passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
