Job description

WSP is searching for an Early Career Substation Drafter in Billings, MT (locations considered: Boise, ID; Denver, CO; Overland Park, KS). The role involves contributing to the Power Delivery Mountain Civil Structural Substation Team by providing technical design and CADD support under general supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the physical work site, surveys, structural concepts, blueprints, schematics, and other sources to support drafting and design activities.
  • Use 3D CADD software to assist with basic design details and prepare drawings requiring a high degree of precision.
  • Provide basic technical design assistance ensuring proper illustration, fit, form, and function with geometric dimensioning, tolerance, and quantity calculations.
  • Verify calculations, design, change orders, interpret contract plans and specifications, and raise any issues or technical problems for resolution.
  • Work with cross‑functional teams in executing project work.
  • Ensure plans adhere to city code, state, and federal regulations.
  • Learn, understand, and implement client’s CAD standards, practices, and procedures.
  • Apply industry standard concrete, rebar, and structural steel detailing practices.
  • Prepare multiple versions of designs for review by engineers.
  • Specify dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements.
  • Collaborate with the engineer‑in‑charge and other technical professionals on project phases, segments, checks, and tasks.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of current drafting and design support practices.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both written and oral, to work with team members.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant post‑education experience in drafting and design support.
  • Familiarity with drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
  • At least 3 years of drafting experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, with the ability to produce shop drawings.
  • Ability to produce steel and foundation plans, sections, and elevation views.
  • Ability to prepare structural bill of materials.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
  • Excellent research and evaluation skills with an analytical mindset.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with others and presenting ideas to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Self‑leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and comply with company policies.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and abiding by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in a closely related discipline.
  • Professional licensure or certification.
  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor and Vault software.
