Job Summary:


As an Apprentice Equipment Operator Level 1 you will operate, maintain, and transport a variety of makes and models of heavy equipment and on highway vehicles in support of vegetation management and tree trimming operations such as a skid steer or excavator. Work may be performed within the minimum approach distance of energized power lines and around critical infrastructure.



Pay: $38.49/hr - Union Rate



Supervisory Position: No



Responsibilities and Requirements:



  • Work under supervision to support vegetation management operations

  • Maintain certification and qualification to work within the minimum approach distance of energized power lines.

  • Assist crew members with equipment setup, performance, and maintenance

  • Perform loading, unloading, and hauling of heavy equipment

  • Maintain the ability to safely, and efficiently operate a variety of makes and models of heavy equipment in varying terrain and environmental conditions

  • Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and overhauls of on highway and off highway equipment

  • Manage teams to complete repairs and overhauls of on highway and off highway equipment

  • Maintain knowledge and ability to safely rig objects or equipment for lifting and hauling

  • Maintain inventories, equipment inspections, schedule repairs and order parts

  • Must work well within a team to complete projects and tasks

  • Must be able to regularly lift 50lbs or more

  • Must be able to work outdoors, year-round in varying environments

  • Must be able to work in, around and amongst poisonous plants and noxious vegetation

  • Other duties as assigned



Minimum Qualifications:



  • Education: High School Diploma

  • Experience: 2 -3 years of experience operating heavy equipment

  • Valid Driver License



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Commercial Driver License: Class A or B

  • Equipment repair or maintenance certifications/licensing

  • Equipment Operating licenses

  • Qualified Applicator License (QAL)

  • Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC)



Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:



  • Knowledge to operate and haul equipment in accordance with industry guidance and standards

  • Knowledge and ability to repair, refurbish or fix heavy equipment

  • Apply knowledge of new and emerging technologies and equipment to business operations

  • Ability to regularly lift 50lbs or more

  • Ability to receive direction or guidance

  • Ability to work within a team

  • Ability to communicate well with others

  • Problem solving skills

  • Recognition of safety hazards



Probationary Period:



  1. 90-day probation period if previously a member or IBEW 1245

  2. 180-day probation period if not a previous member of IBEW 1245



Travel:



  • This position is expected to travel to project sites and locations within California (Operating Area)



Physical Demands:


While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment:


While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme heat and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places and extreme cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Sites can be very hot and dusty.
