Job description

The mission of the Pennsylvania Fabric Discovery Center (PA FDC) housed within Drexel’s Center for Functional Fabrics (CFF) is to advance the design and manufacturing of integrated textile systems that will transform the way we work, live, and interact with the world. The PA FDC’s vision is to help lead innovation and fuel economic expansion in advanced manufacturing of functional fabrics across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and more generally across the entire country. The PA FDC is a transdisciplinary center where teams from academia and industry work together to address the grand challenges of advanced manufacturing, digital fabrication, modeling, design, and rapid prototyping. This in turn will lead to the pilot production of new products that will stimulate the creation of a new industry: textiles that see, hear, emit, and transmit. Reporting to the Director of the PA FDC @ CFF and part of the Innovation Team, the E-Textile Electrical Engineer will be responsible for the applied research & development of new e-textile applications using advanced electrical hardware and software technologies integrated into and with fabrics and garments with a specific focus on manufacturability and sustainability.

This position works in transdisciplinary teams consisting of, but not limited to, industrial designers, material scientists, computer scientists, engineers, sociologists, mathematicians, physicists, students, and commercial partners for the development of the next generation of textiles with enhanced functionality. The E-Textile Electrical Engineer will work collaboratively on funded research projects with subject matter experts to propose technical solutions and develop proofs of concept and prototypes through research, design, analysis, modeling, development, prototyping, testing, circuit design, ASIC design, and systems integration. In addition, this role also participates in internal and external project meetings, assists in developing progress updates and reports, and presents to stakeholders. Although this position is highly collaborative, candidates should be able to work independently with limited oversight. This role is for engineers who excel in a team environment and want an opportunity for hands-on R&D work.

Essential Functions

  • Work with Innovation Team on research and development of microelectronics including design, analysis, modeling, development, prototyping, testing, circuit design, ASIC design, systems integration, and production.
    • Develop system requirements that build on both research and commercial systems for low power systems for data, communications, processing, and RF.
    • Operate digital circuit design tools such as AutoCAD, Ansys, PSpice.
  • Research industry and academic electrical component and systems technologies to identify and potentially utilize diverse technologies and production capabilities for specialized applications.
  • Develop product, technology and design standards through industry and academic collaboration.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree or Equivalent in Electrical Engineering
  • 3-5 years of related professional experience; or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training
  • An understanding of the systems engineering processes beginning with requirements definition through product design iteration with an appreciation for technology roadmapping including sound project and risk management practices.
  • Skills in at least one common programming language/environment relevant to the technologies of interest (Python, Matlab, C, etc.) as well as PLC programming.
  • Self-starter with ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment, both within projects and internally and externally at Drexel.
  • Ability to work in a highly creative and dynamic design team environment with a flexible approach to new design and engineering technologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to facilitate meetings, make effective presentations, and contribute to written reports and proposals.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects with strict deadlines.
  • Ability, especially under pressure, to be professional, courteous, and tactful.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ABET Accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and five – seven years of related professional experience; or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Experience with design and deployment of embedded systems and IoT.

Physical Demands

  • Typically sitting at a desk/table
