E&S Casualty Underwriter (Senior or AVP)

Join to apply for the E&S Casualty Underwriter (Senior or AVP) role at Zurich North America.

Zurich is seeking an experienced E&S Primary Casualty Underwriter (Senior or AVP) to join our new E&S Primary Casualty team in the central region: Schaumburg, IL, Chicago, IL, Dallas, TX, or Houston, TX. The position offers a hybrid work model with flexibility in scheduling. You will collaborate with your manager to set a work schedule that supports your productivity, our clients, and our brokers. The role requires visibility in the marketplace to meet with agents and brokers, working with national wholesalers to drive profitable growth.

This role is open at either a Senior or AVP Underwriter level, with the final level determined by the applicant's experience and skills.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain relationships with broker partners and clients across industries to support business objectives.
• Utilize your casualty underwriting expertise in risk assessment, exposure evaluation, and pricing to build and sustain a profitable book of business.
• Collaborate across departments such as claims, finance, risk engineering, actuarial, and technical underwriting to expand industry knowledge.
• Leverage your market-facing, negotiation, and interpersonal skills to develop relationships with distribution partners in your territory.

Key Duties:

• Act as a customer advocate, understanding their risks and providing comprehensive insurance solutions.
• Apply disciplined approaches to exposure evaluation, risk assessment, and pricing.
• Use data, risk insights, and models to inform decisions at the point of sale.
• Engage in market-facing activities and production within Zurich’s growing E&S Casualty division.
• Administer underwriting rules, insurance laws, regulations, and rating manuals.
• Handle complex assignments within broad limits and authority.
• Coach and develop junior team members.

Qualifications:

Senior Underwriter:

• High School Diploma or equivalent + 5+ years in underwriting or market-facing roles, or
• High School Diploma + 10+ years in claims or underwriting support, or
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice + Associate Degree + 3+ years in underwriting or market-facing roles, or
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice + Associate Degree + 8+ years in claims or underwriting support.

AVP Underwriter:

• High School Diploma + 7+ years in underwriting or market-facing roles, or
• High School Diploma + 14+ years in claims or underwriting support, or
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice + Associate Degree + 5+ years in underwriting or market-facing roles, or
• Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice + Associate Degree + 12+ years in claims or underwriting support.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent industry experience in E&S Commercial insurance.
• Technical knowledge of Primary Casualty Underwriting with E&S.
• Established wholesale broker relationships (E&S brokers).
• Creative problem-solving skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
