Position Summary

The role of the ER technician requires partnering with the healthcare team (Registered Nurse, Provider, Mid-level Provider,) to provide a high level of exceptional care and critical thinking skills. Under the direction of the RN the ER Technician provides functions that are direct and indirect care. The ER technician also assists the team in the management of our behavioral health population and will provide one to one observation as needed. The ER technician participates in care of patients requiring additional infection control protection such as the Ebola Virus. The ER technician plays an integral role in the department’s quality metrics such as turnaround times for blood collection, length of stay and throughput.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:
  • Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
  • Integrates patient’s rights into work practice.
  • Provides exceptional patient care and service with every interaction
  • Performs duties that include but are not limited to: vital signs, intake and output monitoring, activities of daily living, application of simple dressings, ophthalmology equipment set up, gynecological exam set up, transportation, assisting with set up of orthopedic equipment for casting, traction and splints, simple tracheostomy care, maintenance of urinary drainage bags.
  • Responsible for obtaining blood specimens for venipuncture and utilizing lattice for labeling, as well as other specimen collection techniques as ordered by the provider.
  • Places patient on cardiac monitor and obtain 12 lead EKG’s within 10 minutes of patients arrival who present with certain criteria according to ER standards of care.
  • Utilizes current methods of infection control.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement Initiatives.
  • Utilizes appropriate steps in the decision making process to include recognition and priority setting related to patient care and unit based issues.
  • Collaborates and communicates with the health care team.
  • Complete competency requirements.
  • Attends mandatory in- services .
  • Attends staff meetings as required / requested.
  • Utilizes cost containment practices.
  • Transports patients as needed.
  • Ensures stock and supplies are maintained in the patient care areas and carts to ensure efficient safe care
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Interacts with the provider, mid-level provider and Registered Nurse about any patient clinical status or safety concerns they may have.
  • Maintains the environment in compliance with regulatory agencies.

Education & Experience Requirements
  • High School Diploma / Equivalency

  • Effective June 25, 2021, ER Technicians must complete de-escalation training within 1 year of hire or transfer to the Emergency Room.

  • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
  • Frequently move heavy objects more than 50lbs and lift patients of all weights with a minimum of one (1) assist or assistive device; perform difficult manipulative, arm – hand steadiness and hand –eye coordination skills; must be able to move for 90% of the time. Must be physically able to meet all regulatory requirements.
  • Must have the ability to concentrate on fine detail with interruption and attend to tasks for an extended period of time. Individual must be able to understand theories behind several related concepts and remember multiple tasks given during the course of a day.
  • Detects objects closely and far away and detects normal sounds with some background noises.
