Freelance E-Commerce Copywriter
Employment Type: Freelance (Approx. 30–40 hrs/week)
Location: Remote (U.S.-based preferred)
Contract Length: 3–6 months to start, with potential to extend
Pay Rate: $35–$42/hr (depending on experience)
We’re looking for a versatile, detail-oriented Freelance E-Commerce Copywriter to create compelling product and category content that drives online engagement and conversions. You’ll transform technical details into clear, benefit-driven copy that makes it easy for customers to understand, compare, and purchase products across a wide range of categories.
This role suits a writer who understands how shoppers browse and buy online, enjoys working within structured templates, and can maintain quality at scale across large product catalogs.
Responsibilities
- Develop and refine e-commerce content for product detail pages and related assets, including:
- Product names/titles
- Short and long descriptions
- Feature and benefit bullet points
- Basic meta titles and descriptions
- Occasional category, collection, and landing page copy
- Translate technical specifications into customer‑friendly, value‑focused language that highlights use cases and outcomes.
- Apply brand and style guidelines to ensure consistent tone, structure, and formatting across all assigned SKUs and templates.
- Perform light research using vendor materials, spec sheets, internal resources, and online tools to confirm product details and close information gaps.
- Incorporate SEO best practices by using relevant keywords naturally, structuring content for scan‑ability, and aligning with search intent.
- Partner with internal teams (such as merchandising, marketing, and digital content) to clarify product details, align on priorities, and ensure copy supports broader business goals.
- Audit and improve existing copy as needed—refreshing outdated information, enhancing clarity, and aligning legacy content with current standards.
How You’ll Work
- Remote‑first: Work from your preferred location while consistently meeting deadlines and weekly content targets.
- Process‑driven workflow: Receive and manage assignments through project and content management tools; update statuses and share deliverables in an organized, trackable way.
- Clear guidelines: Write within established templates, style guides, and formatting rules, while suggesting improvements when you see opportunities.
- High‑volume production: Balance speed and accuracy to deliver a regular volume of high‑quality product copy each week.
Requirements
- 3+ years of e-commerce, product, or catalog copywriting experience (agency, in‑house, or freelance).
- Portfolio showcasing product page content (titles, bullets, and descriptions for online retail or B2B commerce).
- Excellent writing fundamentals: clear, concise, grammatically sound, benefit‑oriented, and customer‑centric.
- Comfort with structured content: able to work within templates, character limits, and standardized fields.
- Working knowledge of SEO and familiarity with how customers search, filter, and compare products on e‑commerce sites.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to follow style guides, naming conventions, and category‑specific rules.
- Reliable availability for 30–40 hours per week with overlap during U.S. business hours.
Nice to Have
- Experience writing for foodservice, hospitality, retail, industrial, or commercial products.
- Background working with large product catalogs or multi‑brand environments.
- Familiarity with e‑commerce platforms (e.g., Shopify, Magento, Salesforce Commerce Cloud) and/or PIM/PCM systems.
- Experience improving on‑page content for conversion rate optimization (A/B testing, UX collaboration, etc.).
Who You Are
- Customer‑focused: You think like a shopper and prioritize what they need to feel confident completing a purchase.
- Organized and efficient: You manage a content queue effectively, hit deadlines, and keep your work clearly documented.
- Curious and resourceful: You’re comfortable digging into specs, asking questions, resolving inconsistencies, and filling in missing details.
- Independent yet collaborative: You communicate clearly with stakeholders but are comfortable working heads‑down with minimal supervision.
Compensation
- Rate: $35–$42 per hour, commensurate with experience and portfolio strength.
- Freelance engagement: Hourly contract with an anticipated steady workload during the engagement period.
