The Aircraft Mechanic troubleshoots malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti-icing, pneudraulic, engines, auxiliary power unit, and ventilation and heating systems to ensure aircraft remains in safe operating condition. Maintains repairs and modifies aircraft structures and structural components of moderate difficulty. Receives technical guidance, as required, from supervisor or higher-level technician, and will occasionally lead teams through more complex aircraft-related tasks.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintains and repairs aircraft components including but not limited to flight controls, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems, and mechanical components.
- Replaces or repairs worn or damaged components, such as carburetors, alternators, magnetos, fuel controls, fuel pumps, oil pumps, and engine-mounted gearboxes, using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment. Removes engines from aircraft, disassembles and inspects parts for wear, cracks, security, or other defects, and repairs or replaces defective engine parts before reassembling and installing the engine in the aircraft.
- Adjusts, repairs, or replaces electrical wiring systems and aircraft accessories, performs preflight, thru-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections, and services aircraft including flushing crankcases, cleaning screens and filters, greasing moving parts, and checking brakes.
- Applies technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems to diagnose malfunctions.
- Restores equipment condition and operation using technical expertise.
- Interprets technical documentation such as blueprints or manufacturers’ manuals to solve moderate to complex problems.
- Supervises jacking and towing of aircraft, verifies work completion, and may service engines and airframe components at line stations. May specialize in structural, precision, or functional spare parts and assemblies, including engine repair.
- Makes entries in aircraft logs and records as required. Prioritizes workload to meet project schedules.
- Complies with all sections of COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 series applicable to aircraft maintenance and ALSS.
- Maintains working knowledge of technical publications, NAMP, and NALCOMIS aircraft maintenance applications.

Knowledge & Skills
- Thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical troubleshooting, repair procedures, and parts replacement.
- Broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair.
- Basic electrical theory knowledge.
- Familiarity with aircraft tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes, and shears.
- Ability to prioritize workload and maintain schedules.
- Knowledge of corrosion control techniques and handling/disposal of hazardous waste.
- Understanding of aircraft sub-systems, maintenance parameters, and technical orders.
- Valid US State driver’s license and ability to read and interpret data.
- Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking, understanding).
- Ability to obtain a Government flight line driver’s license and a secret security clearance.
Experience & Education
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of specialized courses in aircraft structural repair.
- 2 to 4 years of recent experience in repair, modification, maintenance, and overhaul of the E-2C/D aircraft; 4 years preferred.
Physical Requirements & Working Environment
- Work may be in hangars or outdoors, responding to various operational circumstances including extreme weather.
- May be exposed to noise, fumes, airborne particles, electrical hazards, and moving mechanical parts.
- Must be able to walk, stand, climb, crouch, crawl, handle objects, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must have good visual and auditory acuity, and the ability to distinguish colors and judge depth.
- May operate power vehicles, machinery, and ground support equipment.
