Primary Purpose: Responsible for providing instructional support and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on the identification of students with dyslexia in compliance with TEA and federal guidelines and laws for dyslexia and related disorders.
Qualifications/Skills: Education/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field, masters a plus.
- Valid Texas Teacher Certificate or Teaching Certificate from out of state appropriate for position.
- Literacy Specialist or Reading Interventionist experience, certification preferred.
- Special Education Certification required during 1st year if it has not been already obtained.
- ESL Certification required during 1st year if it has not been already obtained.
- Certification must meet requirements for becoming and remaining qualified for this position in a manner required by Federal and/or State law.
Special Knowledge/Skills:- Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of dyslexia, including characteristics, identification and effective instruction helpful.
- Demonstrated success in working with elementary struggling readers
- Training in IMSE Orton-Gillingham or similar dyslexia intervention methodology – preferred
Experience:- Minimum of three (3) years teaching experience.
- Interventionist experience preferred.
Major Duties and Responsibilities: Instructional Strategies:- Adhere to the district’s philosophy of instruction.
- Development and implementation of lesson plans and progress monitoring practices that fulfill TEA requirements for dyslexia instruction.
- Demonstrate understanding of using assessment data to plan and implement instructional activities that support the individual strengths and needs of dyslexic students.
- Work with all stakeholders in a student’s education to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district and TEA guidelines.
- Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
- Serve as a dyslexia resource and provide assistance to campus administrators, special education and classroom teachers.
Student Growth and Development:- Analyze assessment data and progress monitoring to ensure student growth.
- Complete ongoing assessment of student achievement.
- Provide progress reports for all students in compliance with federal and state guidelines.
- Work cooperatively with special education teachers and support staff to collaborate on curricula, accommodations/modifications as needed for students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Lead instruction for students with dyslexia in the small group instruction.
- Model appropriate multi-sensory strategies aligned to The Dyslexia Handbook
Communication:- Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with colleagues, administrators, and parents.
- Ability to establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, teachers, and administrators.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills to present dyslexia information accurately and clearly.
- Work collaboratively and collectively with principals, staff, and the district Humanities and Special Education team to ensure effective evidenced based structured literacy instruction.
Professional Growth and Development:- Design and lead ongoing professional development on structured literacy practices, dyslexia instruction and strategies, and response to intervention to district staff and parents.
- Keep abreast of all current, evidenced based, and effective instructional practices for students with dyslexia and related disorders.
Other:- Perform other duties as assigned.
