Job summary

Newport News Public Schools seeks a Substitute Teacher to cover assigned subjects in the absence of the regular teacher. You will deliver the prepared lesson plans, monitor student engagement, and maintain the established routines and procedures of the classroom throughout the day.

You will report to the designated school contact, supervise students during all activities, document daily activities in writing, and follow all district policies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Must have high school diploma or GED with at least 30 semester hours of college credit with a minimum 2.5 GPA.
• Possess familiarity with the subject(s) being taught and ability to communicate effectively in writing and speech.

Responsibilities

• Reports to the designated individual upon arrival at the school.
• Reviews lesson plans with the school representative and follows the schedule.
• Maintains routines and procedures of the school and classroom.
• Teaches the lesson plans outlined by the regular teacher.
• Oversees pupil behavior in class, during lunch and in other periods.
• Maintains maximum supervision of assigned students.
• Reports in writing on the day’s activities at the end of each teaching day.
• Follows all policies, rules and procedures.
• Remains in the building during the hours assigned as a Substitute.
• Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
