Job summary

Music Institute of Chicago seeks enthusiastic, dedicated instructors for individual and classroom music instruction at MIC locations. Teach orchestral instruments, voice, guitar, piano, ensembles, early childhood music, jazz, and theory with a focus on positive learning environments.

Positions vary from a few hours per week to over 20 hours weekly, with preference for teaching on multiple days and locations. MIC offers professional development and performance opportunities for faculty.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in music performance/education.
  • 3+ years of teaching experience in instrumental or music theory/early childhood.

Responsibilities

  • Teach weekly lessons/classes (instrumental/vocal technique and repertoire).
  • Develop a thriving studio using effective teaching methods and a supportive atmosphere.
  • Participate in department and staff meetings as needed.
  • Assess student progress and provide feedback.
  • Showcase student progress at recitals and performances.
  • Coordinate scheduling of lessons and performances.
  • Stay updated on teaching methods in music education.
  • Encourage involvement in MIC programs (theory, ensembles, Suzuki).
  • Recruit new students to MIC.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in music performance or music education/pedagogy
Master’s degree in music performance or music education/pedagogy (preferred)
3+ years of studio teaching or classroom instruction per applied area
Strong knowledge of area‑specific technique and pedagogy
Experience educating diverse student groups
Proven ability to develop a studio of students from beginner to advanced
Respected performance credentials
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Additional pedagogical training/certifications
