Job summary

County of Santa Barbara's District Attorney’s Office seeks a Deputy District Attorney II for full-time work in Lompoc, Santa Maria, or Santa Barbara. The incumbent handles case investigation, trial preparation, and prosecution across misdemeanor and felony dockets, mentoring junior attorneys as needed.

The ideal candidate will be an active State Bar member with strong research, writing, and courtroom abilities, and will join a team dedicated to justice and community safety.

Qualifications

• Active membership in the State Bar of California; completion of core courses for a law degree.
• One year of experience as an attorney in public law or two years as a general practicing attorney.
• Combination of training, education, and experience that meets the job standards.

Responsibilities

• Interviews and advises victims and witnesses regarding prospective criminal or civil actions; studies and applies laws and authorities.
• Prepares legal pleadings such as complaints, answers, demurrers, discovery, and judgments.
• Prosecutes felony, misdemeanor, and traffic trials and handles preliminary hearings.
• Performs related work such as petitions, reports, and correspondence.
• Pursues continuing legal education and training and seeks mentorship.
• Performs community outreach with law enforcement and schools or community groups.
