Job summary

Charlottesville Middle School in Charlottesville, VA, seeks a Long-term Substitute 8th Grade Science Teacher for August 2026 through September 2026. Reporting to the Principal, the candidate will implement the approved curriculum, develop lesson plans, and document student progress while maintaining a safe learning environment.

Required is a Virginia teaching license eligibility (Bachelor’s degree); a Master’s degree is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in a job-related area with eligibility for a Virginia teaching license is required.
• A master’s degree is preferred.
• Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.

Responsibilities

• Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to support teachers’ expectations, develop methods for improvement, and/or reinforce classroom goals in the home environment.
• Assess students’ academic learning and/or skills to provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.
• Assist other teachers in implementing the curriculum.
• Attend workshops, seminars, in-service, and evaluations to maintain professional knowledge.
• Coordinate activities to ensure availability of equipment, materials, and personnel to achieve objectives.
• Develop curriculum and/or individual plans in collaboration with the classroom team to provide activities and routines that support needs.
• Instruct students to improve their academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
• Apply best practices for instruction with equity, culturally responsive practices, and trauma-informed care.
• Maintain classroom equipment, files, and materials to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
• Model appropriate social behavior and communication in the classroom.
• Monitor students in various settings to provide a safe learning environment.
• Organize activities suitable for age groups to actively participate in learning.
• Oversee instructional assistants and encourage participation in planning and curriculum development.
• Participate in program activities to convey or receive information related to the program plan.
• Prepare teaching materials and reports to implement lesson plans and document progress.
• Respond to emergencies to resolve safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel.
• Respond to inquiries from various sources to resolve issues and provide information.
