Job summary

The City of Atlanta seeks a Utility Locate Technician to identify and mark underground water distribution and sewer lines, and to respond to Georgia 811 locate requests to prevent damage during excavation. You will work outdoors, operate a City vehicle, and use GPS, GIS, and various computer programs while maintaining records and communicating with customers and contractors.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one (1) year utility locate experience.
• Valid Georgia driver's license.
• Knowledge of MUTCD and Georgia Dig Law is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Searches for and locates underground water and sewer infrastructure and properly marks the location of such infrastructure, resolving locate requests from the Georgia One-Call Center (811).
• Locates water mains, service lines, and meters to prevent third party damages during excavations, construction projects, or other infrastructure repairs or work.
• Assesses and reports water leaks.
• Performs initial and on-going assessments for sites under construction throughout the duration of the validity period of each locate ticket.
• Operates a City vehicle in a safe manner.
• Researches and interprets utility records.
• Contacts customers and contractors.
• Uses and maintains electronic locate equipment.
• Uses GPS equipment.
• Uses GIS and various computer programs.
• Verifies existing records, and completes the necessary paperwork to properly document utility locating activities.
• Provides an emergency response to damaged water mains and other high profile water distribution lines that may be in conflict with other damaged utilities.
• May perform other duties as assigned.

General Description and Classification Standards:

Performs semi-skilled work in the Department of Watershed Management. Responsible for the correct, safe and efficient locating of underground water distribution and sewer collection and conveyance infrastructure owned and operated by the City of Atlanta.

Supervision Received:

Works with minimal supervision, manages own time effectively, maintains control over all current projects/responsibilities. Follows up on all relevant issues.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of Georgia Department of Transportation, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
• Knowledge of the Georgia Dig Law.
• Knowledge of the Georgia PSC Marking Standard.
• Skills in the use of computers and common programs including Microsoft Word and common internet services including Google Earth.
• Ability to learn how to utilize the City's computerized locate ticket management systems.
• Skills in verbal and written communications.

• Ability to read, interpret and create utility drawings.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience

High school diploma, or equivalent and a minimum of one (1) year utility locate experience.

Licensures and Certifications

Valid Georgia driver's license.

Preferred Requirements

Three (3) years of experience locating underground utilities.

Work Environment:

Required physical, lifting, and sensory capabilities are requirements to perform the job successfully. Typical environmental conditions associated with job. Must be able and willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions Must be available to work overtime and weekends (as needed).

Lifting Requirements:

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
