Job summary

Western Veterinary Partners invites veterinary students to join their externship program across U.S. practices.

You\'ll apply classroom knowledge in real clinics, gain experience in client communication, case histories, physical exams, and in-house diagnostics, and observe or assist surgical procedures. With flexible blocks, a stipend of $1,000, and opportunities to explore small animal, mixed, dental, or exotics services, externs build your network and prepare for graduation.

Qualifications

• Externship applicants must be veterinary students in any grade.
• Experience areas include client communication, history taking, exams, case planning and in-house labs.
• Observation or participation in surgical and dental procedures may be available.

Responsibilities

• Gain real-world clinic experience under supervising veterinarian.
• Develop communication, time management, and record-keeping skills.

Western Veterinary Partners externship program allows students to gain valuable real-world experience by taking what you’ve learned in the classroom and bringing it to the clinic. Veterinary Students in any grade can apply for an externship with a WVP Practice as part of their clinical year externship blocks or for informal externship experience.

What You Will Learn

• Working closely with the supervising veterinarian you will gain experience in all areas of practice management including; client communication - gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, reviewing estimates; Ownership of cases by creating treatment plans, diagnostics, managing and performing in house labs; Observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures including dental procedures; and overall medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice learn communication skills, time management skills, fiscal responsibilities, record keeping, and relationship building with the medical team, support staff, and clients.*
