Job summary

Western Veterinary Partners offers veterinary externships that let students apply classroom knowledge in a real clinic setting. Externs gain experience across diagnostic and treatment planning, client communication, and in-house lab work while working with a supervising veterinarian.

Participants receive a $1,000 stipend and have the opportunity to explore different practice areas and locations across the country.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited 4-year DVM program or recently graduated.
• Ability to communicate effectively with clients and team members.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.

Western Veterinary Partners externship program allows students to gain valuable real-world experience by taking what you’ve learned in the classroom and bringing it to the clinic. Veterinary Students in any grade can apply for an externship with a WVP Practice as part of their clinical year externship blocks or for informal externship experience.

What you will learn:

• Working closely with the supervising veterinarian you will gain experience in all areas of practice management including; client communication - gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, reviewing estimates; Ownership of cases by creating treatment plans, diagnostics, managing and performing in house labs; Observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures including dental procedures; and overall medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice learn communication skills, time management skills, fiscal responsibilities, record keeping, and relationship building with the medical team, support staff, and clients.*
