Job summary

Bergen County’s Advocate Victim Witness Program seeks an Advocate to provide services to crime victims and witnesses, navigate court procedures, and coordinate referrals. The role includes crisis intervention, intake assessments, and maintaining case files with compliance to county and state regulations.

Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree with experience or five years of relevant work; bilingual Spanish/English is strongly encouraged.

Qualifications

  • Bilingual Spanish/English strongly encouraged to apply (read/write/speak/understand both languages)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Word, Outlook, Excel)

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary legal advocate for victims navigating the court system.
  • Accompany victims to prosecutor’s office, grand jury, or courts for support.
  • Provide referrals to counseling, social services and self-help groups.
  • Assist clients with court preparations, explain procedures and rights.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships to ensure advocacy.
  • Draft and assist with legal documents and court filings within scope of practice.
  • Provide crisis intervention and safety planning.
  • Conduct intake assessments and needs evaluations.
  • Manage agency hotline and case management for clients.
  • Coordinate Court Accompaniment Volunteers.
  • Prepare reports on activities and outcomes.
  • Maintain detailed case files per regulations.

Education

Bachelor's degree + 1 year experience
Five years of professional experience (or equivalent)
LSW/LCSW or Paralegal Certificate preferred
