Job description

Duke Surgery seeks Division Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Chief of General Surgery for Duke Health Children’s Hospital.

The Department of Surgery at Duke University and Duke University Children’s Hospital seek qualified, visionary applicants with proven clinical, leadership, administrative, and program development skills to become the next Division Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Chief of General Surgery for Duke Health Children’s Hospital. This position will also be critically involved in planning and execution of the North Carolina Children’s Hospital, a new, free-standing children’s hospital being developed through a partnership between Duke Health and UNC Health.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Qualified for Duke University appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor
  • Six or more years of clinical, academic, and leadership experience in Pediatric Surgery
  • Completion of medical doctor degree (MD or MBBS), completion of an ACGME-accredited general surgery residency, and a pediatric surgery fellowship
  • Current American Board of Surgery certification in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery
  • Strong track record of clinical operations and academic achievement
  • Commitment to recruiting, developing and retaining women, underserved minorities and those with disability status
  • Be growth-minded, innovative, and quality-driven; and must have communication and interpersonal skills to work within a highly collaborative and integrated health system.

The candidate will be responsible for:

  • Partnering with the Chair of the Duke Department Surgery and the Surgeon-in-Chief of the Duke Health Integrated Practice to promote a collegial work environment in the Pediatric Surgery Division and across the multidisciplinary Duke Children’s Surgical Services group.
  • Providing outstanding clinical care, supporting teaching for a range of learners, and advancing a portfolio of discovery and research activities.
  • Serving alongside the Leadership Team of DHIP and Duke Health Children’s Hospital to implement impactful clinical programs and enhance quality metrics to support high-quality surgical care.
  • Engaging in the planning and development of the new North Carolina Children’s Hospital.

The Duke Children’s Hospital is a "hospital within a hospital," with in-patient facilities housed within the Duke Central Tower and the Duke University Hospital, including a 20-bed pediatric intensive care unit, a 20-bed pediatric cardiac intensive care unit, and a 67-bed neonatal intensive care unit. The Duke Children's Health Center, adjacent to Duke Hospital, provides an attractive, family-friendly setting for out-patient pediatric services. North Carolina Children’s Hospital is planned as a 500-bed, free-standing hospital dedicated to the care of children and co-developed through a 50/50 partnership between Duke health and UNC Health.
