The Medical Support Worker (MSW) supports nursing staff in providing medical care at the Medical Support Units, Jerry Graesser Center (JGC), and in the community. The MSW is part of the individual support planning team, promoting independence and community participation for the individuals served. Responsibilities include assisting with training new employees, transporting clients to appointments and events, and supporting daily living needs.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Reports to work as scheduled, demonstrating dependability and punctuality.
- Provides flexible services across various hours, locations, and days, including holidays.

- Maintains confidentiality of individuals supported.
- Assesses client needs, develops, implements, and evaluates care plans.
- Communicates effectively with clients, families, and staff about medical concerns and issues impacting services.
- Recognizes emergencies and implements appropriate procedures.
- Administers medication following doctor’s orders and agency protocols.
- Completes and submits paperwork timely, including timesheets.
- Supports daily living activities such as grooming, hygiene, grocery shopping, meal planning, household management, and clothing care.
- Maintains the environment, including cleaning, yard work, and reporting maintenance needs.
- Manages financial transactions, assists with budgeting, and promotes community access through activities and transportation planning.
- Attends all scheduled meetings, appointments, and training sessions.
- Performs duties professionally, meeting deadlines and producing quality work.
OTHER JOB DUTIES:
- Assists nurses with admissions, transfers, and treatments under supervision.
- Performs other duties necessary for quality service provision.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience in human services preferred; active on Nebraska nurse aide registry is helpful but not required.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to pass background checks and CPS checks.
- Valid driver’s license, driving record clearance, and automobile insurance if required.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to read and follow written instructions.
- Strong multi-tasking skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Must be able to lift at least 70 pounds.
- Ability to perform physical activities such as bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, walking, sitting, standing, climbing, pushing, carrying, and grasping.
- Work involves exposure to various weather and traffic conditions.
ESSENTIAL DRIVER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist individuals boarding and exiting vehicles, ensuring safety and seat belt use.
- Secure wheelchairs and maintain vehicle safety per policies.
- Keep the vehicle interior clean.
- Transport clients safely and responsibly under all conditions.
- Perform daily vehicle safety checks and report issues promptly.
