Role Overview

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Test and Assessment (TS) Department, Test Diagnostics Branch is offering a full‑time internship for recent or soon‑to‑be bachelor's or master’s degree graduates. The research focuses on instrumentation for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) testing.

Responsibilities

As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant under a mentor, you will develop and field new and upgraded instrumentation for CBRNE testing, including measuring pressure, temperature, force, displacement, and chemical, biological, and radiological detection.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in technical science, engineering, or applied mathematics earned within the last 60 months, or expected by 1/1/2027.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0.
• Minimum age 21 at application.
• U.S. citizenship required.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance and pass drug screening.

Start Date

Appointments will be made immediately upon selection. Exact start dates will be coordinated with the selected candidate.

Appointment Length

Initial full‑time research appointment of 12 months, with the option to renew for up to four additional years, contingent on project needs and funding.

Appointment Provisions

Stipend ranging from $5,500.00 to $6,700.00 per month, based on academic standing and experience. Health insurance supplement, relocation assistance, training, and travel support may also be provided.

Eligibility Requirements

• Citizenship: U.S. citizen only.
• Degree: Bachelor’s or master’s degree earned within the last 60 months or expected by 1/1/2027.
• Minimum overall GPA: 3.00.
• Disciplines: Engineering (including aerospace, bioengineering, computer, electrical, materials, mechanical, metallurgical, mining, etc.), Mathematics and Statistics, Physics.
