  • Perform general maintenance including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and painting as assigned.
  • Inspect, test, and repair emergency generators and maintain logs.
  • Supervise inmate trusties assigned to assist maintenance personnel and ensure tool control.
  • Maintain records of maintenance and repair and submit reports as required.
  • Adhere to safety rules and ensure trustee compliance; identify issues and propose solutions.

SUPERVISED BY:DETENTION CENTER SUPERVISORS

EFFECTIVE DATE:09/24/01

RATE OF PAY: $18.50 / HOURLY

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:This is a skilled position, performing general maintenance and repair of office facilities and related equipment under general supervision.

DUTIES:

  • A. Abide by the “Law Enforcement Code of Ethics”.
  • B. Maintain and repair security and safety systems in the jail to include fire alarms, fire sprinkler systems, emergency generators, and electronic security control systems.
  • C. Perform maintenance and repair of jail operational equipment, such as doors, locks, dishwashers, laundry washers and dryers, heating and cooling systems, hot water systems, plumbing and sewage systems, and lighting systems.
  • D. Perform general maintenance and repair of jail’s operational systems, including carpentry work, electrical, plumbing, painting, and so forth, as assigned.
  • E. Inspect, test, and repair as necessary emergency generators at the jail, and maintain logs documenting testing and repair.
  • F. Supervise and ensure control of inmate trusties assigned to assist maintenance personnel.
  • G. Maintain tool control of all assigned equipment by conducting a daily inventory of all tools.
  • H. Be responsible for security and use of maintenance tools and equipment assigned to or used by him or herself or personnel under his or her control.
  • I. Maintain proper records of maintenance and repair performed, and submit reports or documentation as required.
  • J. Adhere to general rules of safety in all duties, including ensuring adherence to safety rules by trustees or other helpers.
  • K. Be alert for conditions or situations which inhibit efficient operation of the Agency or themaintenance functions, and make recommendations for solutions.
  • L. Perform any additional duties that may be required by the Sheriff or through necessity of situations.

JOB PREREQUISITES:

High school diploma or GED.

At least four years of experience in general maintenance work.

Knowledge of general electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work, and safe use of related tools and equipment.

Ability to effectively communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, and to give and followinstructions effectively.

Possession of normal sight and hearing, and physical agility sufficient to perform the duties involved,including reaching, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, and lifting heavy objects.

Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Includes both indoor and outdoor environments. Portions of work are performed inside an adult detention

facility, and include working in proximity to inmates of all dispositions. Subject to verbal abuse frominmates. Potential for physical harm is present. Usually normal daytime hours, but may be subject to callout

in emergencies and/or working overtime when necessary. Hazards include all dangers associated withgeneral maintenance work.
