Job description

DSHS's Finance, Technology, and Analytics (FTA) Administration is looking to hire a licensed CDL Truck Driver 2 for the Western State Hospital campus in Lakewood.

Imagine driving with less or no traffic, going home at the same time every day, and creating opportunities for other activities. As a DSHS truck driver, these things will become your reality. Each day, you will have a routine and accomplish job responsibilities without the obstacles most CDL drivers confront in their workday.

  1. You will have stable employment with a fixed day shift schedule of consistent responsibilities, and Tuesdays & Wednesdays off.
  2. All driving is local with no overhead expenses.
  3. You will work with a variety of transportation equipment.
  4. DSHS prioritizes your safety, providing allowances for protective equipment and making your work responsibilities physically easier.
  5. Your work contributes immediately to the rehabilitation of others.
  6. Opportunities performed on-site at least three days a week may be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary.

Washington State offers one of the best benefit packages in the nation, including family health and retirement plans, paid leave, and opportunities for salary increases and training. Consider how much you currently pay out of pocket for benefits.

Some of what you will do

Our drivers operate medium to large trucks, buses, and special vehicles between 28,000 GVW and 60,000 GVW to safely deliver food, laundry, furniture, and supplies. Operation of vehicles such as trash/recycle trucks, street sweepers, forklifts, fleet cars, and seasonal snow equipment is also possible. You will load, unload, and transport freight, mail, and packages using various equipment. You will also transport staff safely throughout the campus and on off-campus day trips, assisting patients as needed. Daily responsibilities include safety inspections, fueling, maintaining logs, and cleaning vehicles.

Who should apply
  • Drivers with no restrictions on their Class A or B CDL with a P-1 Passenger Endorsement.
  • Valid driver's license free from serious traffic violations.
  • At least one year of experience operating commercial vehicles of at least 18,000 GVW and/or transporting passengers. Experience as a Truck Driver 1 for Washington State can substitute for this requirement.
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Patience, tolerance, and respect towards others, especially those with physical or personal needs.
  • Knowledge of safe operation rules and State Motor Vehicle laws.
  • Experience in servicing and maintaining automotive equipment is helpful.
  • Ability to drive in inclement weather.
  • Capability to load/unload equipment.
  • Forklift operation knowledge.
