The Health Information Management Technician collaborates with internal staff in development of improved capabilities in the areas of patient registration, documentation, filing, coding, utilization, Release of Information, data quality, compliance, auditing, records analysis, privacy and legal health record certification. Conducts daily audits of patient charts with the goal of coordinating with the utilization management team and the reimbursement office for the processing of fees for professional services provided to patients within all SWVMHI clinical areas. Analyzes patient medical records to ensure that documentation by providers conforms to legal and procedural requirements. Interacts and coaches’ physicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare staff on methods of improving documentation to align with policies and procedures. Converts hard copy documents into digital records for interoperability and storage. Conducts admissions and discharges of patients as required. Coordinates processing of court documents for internal legal hearings and manages the court docket. Reviews data for potential HIPAA privacy breaches and reports findings to the Privacy Officer. Maintains the master patient index and daily bed census for the hospital. Provides notary services as a licensed Notary Public in the state of Virginia.
