DRIVER TRAINING & SAFETY LEAD (GRANT/FT/BENEFITS)

Nature of Work

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

The Driver Training and Safety Lead works under the transit supervisor, overseeing the work, training, and safety activities of bus drivers responsible for transporting passengers. This role involves coordinating, monitoring, and completing driver training in compliance with state and federal guidelines, including DOT physicals and license expiration management. The position acts as an intermediary between driving staff and administrative personnel, resolving transportation complaints, recommending retraining, and serving as a liaison with the Fleet Maintenance contractor regarding vehicle scheduling.

The incumbent also serves as a backup driver, responsible for driving buses or other vehicles as needed, and may assist with farebox collection. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required for preparing transit-related reports, spreadsheets, memos, and internal correspondence.

Examples of Duties

  • Oversee daily driver pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, auditing processes and reporting defects.
  • Ensure all licensing and compliance requirements are met for drivers.
  • Conduct employee training on passenger assistance, FCC radio procedures, wheelchair securement, defensive driving, and maintain training records.
  • Inspect vehicles for safety and coordinate repairs.
  • Perform routine and unannounced driver evaluations and safety check rides, documenting and reviewing results with drivers.
  • Assist with equipment inventory and vehicle inspections for safety compliance.
  • Attend training courses to maintain proficiency and act as a relief dispatcher when necessary.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and customer complaints, providing assessments and recommendations.
  • Participate in recruitment and route management during adverse conditions.
  • Administer refresher and remedial training as needed, and communicate training plans to management.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of transportation and vehicle operations.
  • Skills in time management, critical thinking, communication, and listening.
  • Ability to work independently and with others.
  • Organizational skills and ability to work under pressure.
  • Valid Maryland Class "B" driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements, no more than three points.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Education

High school diploma, GED, or vocational-technical certificate.

Experience

  • 1-2 years in a lead or supervisory role, preferably in transit or transportation operations.
  • 3-5 years of experience driving large commercial vehicles, including transit buses.

License

Valid Maryland Class "B" driver's license with passenger and air brake endorsements, with no more than three points.

Safety

Compliance with OSHA, MOSH, and local safety policies is mandatory.
