Join McLane as a Driver Trainee to learn the essential functions of a driver, earn competitive wages, and receive fully paid CDL‑A training. The program will expose you to warehouse and operational functions as part of the developmental process of becoming a McLane Driver.
Program Details
- Pay Rate: $23.75/hour while in school and training.
- Requirement: Must obtain a CDL‑A permit prior to class start.
- Training: Monday–Thursday, on‑site in Northfield, MN for 4 weeks.
Earnings
- Average first‑year earnings: $80,000–$90,000
- Minimum guarantee: $65,000 per year as a driver

Essential Job Functions
- Maneuver tractor into position to attach trailer and handle lines to secure.
- Operate truck safely in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and company policies.
- Inspect tractor‑trailer equipment for defects pre‑ and post‑trip, submit DOT inspection report.
- Operate Driver Delivery Handheld (DDH), document delivery receipts, product temperatures, and exceptions; inspect trailer for product security.
- Ride and train with a Driver Trainer to various destinations, learning commercial driving regulations and observing driving techniques.
- Maintain driver log (Manual or PeopleNet) per DOT regulations.
- Assist the Driver in unloading trailer and delivering product to customer premises.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Meet eligibility requirements in the McLane Transfer and Promotion Policy.
- Complete training and receive Class A CDL within 6 months.
- Ability to select, load, unload, and deliver all products ordered by McLane customers.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, reach, bend, squat, and stoop as required.
- Read and comprehend labels, instructions, and bills of lading.
- Perform mathematical calculations to verify product quantities.
- Communicate with customers, management, and teammates.
- Safely drive a tractor‑trailer and use equipment such as a 2‑wheeled dolly, ramp, and onboard PeopleNet devices.
- Ability to read, write, and understand English at a level sufficient for job‑related tasks.
