Description
CARE FOR THE HOMELESS (CFH) is a growing not-for-profit health care and social service agency serving the homeless population of New York City. CFH provides medical and behavioral health services at thirty shelters, soup kitchens, and drop-in centers throughout NYC.
CFH is seeking a Driver/Residence Worker for its Residential Services Sites. These sites operate under contract with the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and are subject to inspections and audits by DHS, the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, and the Coalition for the Homeless of New York City.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Drive CFH residents, staff, and other affiliates to and from assigned locations safely and courteously.
- Transport CFH business items as directed.
- Maintain awareness of potential risks to clients and staff while operating vehicles.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of vehicles daily.
- Keep daily logs of vehicle mileage and hours.
- Conduct routine inspections of vehicles regularly.
- Respond to emergency calls as directed by shelter management.
- Oversee routine maintenance appointments for shelter vehicles.
- Assist with special events and maintain safety and security of residents through staff-specific posts, security rounds, and enforcing facility rules.
- Respond effectively to client emergencies, including medical and behavioral incidents.
- Manage operational procedures for access control, fire patrols, surveillance, safety, and compliance documentation.
- Distribute and control inventory supplies, including meals.
- Prepare, heat, and serve nutritious meals, ensuring health and safety standards are met.
- Maintain cleanliness of dining and service areas.
- Handle incoming food deliveries and maintain storage areas.
- Participate in ongoing training for food service and other operational skills.
- Register new clients, orient them to the facility, and ensure documentation compliance.
- Facilitate vacancy control and accept referrals during and outside of business hours.
- Communicate effectively with staff to achieve facility goals.
- Conduct hourly facility checks and inspections of resident units.
- Assist with medication calls and property management for residents missing or leaving the facility.
- Escort clients to appointments and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Educational and Experience Requirements:
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Ability to operate a large vehicle (34’ or more).
- Valid New York State Driver’s License (CDL preferred); license points must meet insurance requirements.
- Valid NYC DOHMH Food Protection Certificate or equivalent.
- Excellent communication skills.
- AED/CPR Certification or willingness to obtain.
- Some computer skills.
- Experience with homelessness or populations with special needs is preferred.
