Job summary

Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens, Inc. seeks a Driver-Maintenance Worker to keep centers clean and safe and to transport seniors to activities and appointments. You will perform light repairs, manage records, and ensure safety on all trips.

The role requires a valid NYS driver's license, good communication, empathy for seniors, and ability to lift 25 lbs. This is a full-time, on-site position with daily vehicle use.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Valid NYS Driver's License (Class D) with clean driving record.
• At least 1 year of driving experience with minimal violations in 24 months.
• Good communication skills and ability to relate to the elderly.
• Knowledge of local roadways; ability to drive long periods.
• Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs and assist clients getting in and out.

Responsibilities

• Maintain center in a clean, sanitary condition per health rules and regulations.
• Clean bathrooms daily and stock supplies as needed.
• Provide minor repairs (painting, plumbing) at sites.
• Transport elderly clients on scheduled routes to centers, shops, medical appointments.
• Escort and assist elderly to and from the vehicle.
• Ensure passenger safety with seat belts, wheelchair restraints, etc.
• Keep daily gasoline and mileage records.
• Pick up and return vehicle to parking area daily.
• Maintain program reports including daily route sheets.
• Operate and maintain a 2-way radio in the agency vehicle.

For over 125 years, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has been providing quality social services to the neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens and currently offers 160-plus programs and services for children, youth, adults, seniors, and those struggling with mental illness.

Older Adult Centers promote an active life for seniors. The centers aim to assist them in preserving their independence and health by offering a wide range of activities and services, such as breakfast, lunch, health screenings, social services, educational workshops, class exercises, discussion groups, games, art classes, lectures, workshops, organized outings, and special events.

STATEMENT OF THE JOB

• The Driver-Maintenance Worker will be required to ensure the center is maintained in a clean, sanitary condition for the benefit of those attending the program and in compliance with health and safety rules and regulations.
• Ensure that bathrooms are cleaned daily and stocked with supplies as necessitated.
• Provide minor repairs at sites where necessitated to include painting, plumbing.
• Transport elderly clients on regularly scheduled routes from their homes to destinations such as senior centers, supermarkets, shopping malls, medical appointments as determined by the Manager or other assigned staff.
• Escort and assist the elderly and infirm clients from their homes to the vehicle and back, if necessary.
• Ensure the safety of the passengers through the use of seat belts, wheelchair brackets and other safety devices.
• Keep daily gasoline and mileage records.
• Pick up and return vehicle to parking place daily.
• Maintain program reports including the completion of daily route sheets.
• Operate and maintain a 2-way radio in the agency vehicle.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Valid New York State Driver's License (Class D) and provision of printout of annual Driving Record from Motor Vehicle Bureau.
• One (1) year driving experience with no more than one moving violation within a 24 month period, no driving while intoxicated convictions.
• Good Communication Skills.
• Knowledge of roadways in the area where program operates.
• Demonstrate sensitivity and an ability to relate to the elderly with patience and flexibility.
• Ability to drive vehicle for long periods of time.
• Ability to get in and out of vehicle frequently.
• Ability to assist older clients in and out of agency vehicles.
• Able to lift 25 lbs.
