Position Summary

To assist in the collection of residential solid waste.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities
  • Loads residential waste into the hopper of a rear-load truck.
  • Operates mechanical packer to load and compact trash from hopper into the truck body.
  • Assists in loading waste from rear-load containers into the truck when assigned.
  • Helps the driver in cleaning the packer blade and truck body as required on landfill stops.
Methods, Procedures, Equipment, Materials
  • Lifts bags or containers that weigh up to 75 lbs. from ground level to a hopper approximately 3 ft. above ground level. Uses a barrel and dolly to collect waste on back-door service routes. Lifts large, bulky items (such as washers, dryers, tree limbs, concrete, etc.) from curbside to the truck hopper.
  • Pushes/pulls hand levers to control the packer blade.
  • Guides driver and containers into the appropriate position.
Working Conditions
  • Outdoors in all weather conditions.
Experience And Competencies
  • Must know and use proper lifting techniques to avoid injury. Able to recognize unacceptable waste (such as gasoline and other flammable, hazardous materials) and report it to the driver.
  • Able to follow safe operating practices, including lockout/tagout procedures to ensure truck is inoperative when working in the truck body.
Physical Requirements
  • Walking, jogging, bending, climbing, twisting, lifting, and carrying waste weighing up to 75 lbs. (avg. 20-25 lbs.) from curbside to the rear hopper of the truck. Sufficient stamina for steady work pace through and entire shift. Ability to work utilizing hearing protection, reflective vest, steel-toed work shoes, utility gloves, and safety glasses (PPE).
  • Reaching, pushing, pulling levers.
  • Pushing and pulling containers weighing from 300-400 lbs.
  • Reaching to hook up cables. Pushing/pulling levers to operate winch and packer mechanism.
  • Climbing into the body of the vehicle approximately 3-4 feet above ground level. Shoveling, sweeping, and pulling debris lodged under the packer blade.
