Job summary

U.S. Xpress, Inc. in Ellenwood, GA is seeking a Driver Development Specialist to deliver driver training and development across orientation and ongoing programs at the Ellenwood terminal.

The role coaches, assesses, and inspires drivers through classroom, one-on-one, and hands-on instruction, using simulations, role-plays, and e-learning while ensuring DOT compliance and collaborating with Operations and Safety.

Qualifications

  • Experience delivering driver-facing training and development.
  • Ability to conduct classroom and hands-on training sessions.
  • Knowledge of DOT Regulations and FMCSR preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct driver-facing development in classroom, one-on-one, and hands-on settings.
  • Present information using varied instructional formats (role-plays, simulations, videos).
  • Facilitate simulator training and update content as needed.
  • Provide one-on-one training and tutoring for at-risk students to support program completion.

Primary Position Purpose

The Driver Development Specialist is responsible for delivering driver training and development to the full driver population in orientation. This role provides classroom, one‑on‑one, and hands‑on training. This position works in compliance with Company, Federal, and State regulations and fosters an encouraging learning environment.

Position Functions
  • Conduct driver‑facing development in classroom, one‑on‑one, and hands‑on settings.
  • Present information using a variety of instructional techniques or formats, i.e., role‑playing, simulations, team exercises, group discussions, and videos.
  • Facilitate and implement simulator training and development programs; maintain knowledge of simulator technology and contribute to simulator content development and improvement recommendations.
  • Provide additional one‑on‑one training and tutoring for at‑risk students to support successful program completion.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, class completions, evaluations, and coaching sessions in the appropriate systems.
  • Perform safety‑related functions including, but not limited to, accident reviews and skills and behavior assessments.
  • Offer specific training and development programs to help workers maintain or improve job skills, i.e., close‑quarter training, simulator training, e‑learning, or other proprietary or non‑proprietary training and development.
  • Coach and counsel drivers in collaboration with Operations and Safety for violations of DOT Regulations, FMCSR, safety standards, and company policies.
  • Conduct on‑road tests and other evaluations with drivers to determine if drivers meet U.S. Xpress skills and conduct standards and are in compliance with safety, DOT, FMCSR, and company regulations and policies.
  • Engage in ongoing education relating to teaching skills and complete required professional development.
  • Maintain all classroom technology and equipment; responsible for reporting and tracking problems to resolution.
  • Collaborate in‑person with all levels of the organization to harness collective intelligence of the workforce.
  • Attend all in‑person meetings and trainings on recent developments, goals, and objectives. Participate in such discussions by offering input and advice.
  • Regularly engage remotely and in‑person with customers and potential customers to establish rapport, open communication, and expectations.
  • Build credibility and trust among managed employees by providing prompt and constructive feedback in office when observing such need.
  • Lead and facilitate regularly scheduled meetings and in‑person trainings that harmonize collaboration internal to the department and external to other SBUs.
  • Determine best practices and reinforce constructive and positive feedback through face‑to‑face interactions with employees on the floor in real time.
Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to implement new driver‑facing training and development programs as required
  • Ability to learn and use technology as needed; examples include, but are not limited to, ELDs, simulators, learning management tools, standard office software (Microsoft Office, Outlook, Skype, etc.), telephones, and classroom equipment
  • Maintain an appropriate professional presence
  • Knowledge of federal and state traffic laws preferred
  • Skilled in operating an articulated vehicle and trailer up to 53’ preferred
  • Ability to travel up to 25% with some overnight travel may be required
  • Establish and achieve clear, specific performance goals for personal and team achievement
  • Work well with others in the team in a manner that maximizes team results
  • Ability to communicate in a courteous and professional manner; correctly conveys information, both verbally and in written form, with the needs and expectations of the audience in mind

Licenses & Certifications
  • Class-A CDL (Interstate) required
  • Medical Certification required or ability to acquire within 90 days of hire
  • Maintain U.S. Xpress‑required certifications and professional licensure
  • Complete U.S. Xpress Professional Driving Program once a year

Work Environment: This job operates in a normal professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, fax machines, and filing cabinets.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to communicate or exchange information. The employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as viewing a computer, expansive reading, or preparing and analyzing data, reports, and figures. Must have the ability to perform each of the following physical requirements: Talk and/or hear Stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel Crouch or squat under a maximum height of 44” during pre‑trip inspections and when doing tandem adjustments Take steps in a squatting position under a maximum height of 44” during pre‑trip inspections Turn head 90 degrees bilaterally Climb steps or ladder up to a height of 51” and climb on a single step 24” while pulling full body weight while entering and exiting the tractor and/or trailer Walk up to 150 feet several times during the workday Make quick, rational decisions and have full and constant use of arms, hands, legs, and feet while performing driving tasks such as turning, slowing, braking, passing, backing, and parking the vehicle Stand and completely balance on full body weight while entering and exiting the tractor/trailer Reach all vehicle controls for operation and all equipment for pre‑trip inspections, including overhead reach (up to 70”) and reach across midline Handle and finger all vehicle controls for operation and all equipment for pre‑trip inspections, maintain a constant and firm grip, and perform frequent fine hand manipulation
