Job summary

FedEx Freight seeks a CDL Class A coordinator to develop pre-qualified employees into CDL drivers and support operations leadership with training and morale activities in Maryland. You will perform city driving duties and assist with special assignments when not instructing.

Responsibilities include pre-trip inspections, freight handling, class scheduling, and coordinating driver development programs while ensuring DOT compliance and safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with double/triple, hazmat, and tank endorsements.
  • Must possess two (2) years’ verifiable experience within the previous three (3) years operating a Class A CMV.
  • Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under 49 CFR.

Responsibilities

  • Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles/triples where applicable.
  • Perform pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment.
  • Hook/unhook trailers and convertor dollies.
  • Perform freight handling using forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
  • Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, and rope.
  • Comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures.
  • Follow dispatch instructions and communicate delays or problems.
  • Coordinate class schedules and locations for driver development training.
  • Conduct road tests and ensure adherence to Smith System safe driving guidelines.

Starting Rate of Pay: $ 33.92 per hour

POSITION OVERVIEW

Effectively develop pre-qualified employees into CDL qualified drivers as well as increase morale and opportunity for advancement for employees. Perform city driving responsibilities and assist operations leadership with special assignments when not instructing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles (and triples, where applicable) and/or straight trucks
  • Perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment
  • Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer
  • Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including but not limited to: forklift, pallet jack and hand truck
  • Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies, including but not limited to: pallets, straps and rope
  • Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
  • Verify and complete required documentation and reports
  • Comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures
  • Collect cash or checks for freight charges, as required, and maintain required documentation
  • Follow dispatch instructions and communicate with dispatch, including but not limited to: delays, arrivals and equipment problems, as required
  • Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs and solicits additional business
  • Demonstrate internal and external customer service
  • Ask for additional business from customers, and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities
  • Create and edit current curriculum to better educate participants
  • Coordinate class schedules and locations, schedule skills course and drive times, secure equipment and supplies and measure success of participants
  • Maintain good working relationship with service center managers and manager driver development
  • Conduct pre-shift meetings, advertise for new participants and work with operations to encourage enrollment
  • Assist in certifying new driver development coordinator instructors to ensure uniformity
  • Conduct road tests, facilitate Smith System safe driving guidelines
  • Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
  • Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess a class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials, and tank endorsements
  • Must possess two (2) years’ verifiable experience within the previous three (3) years’ operating a Class A (tractor/trailer) commercial motor vehicle (CMV)
  • Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards
  • Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations
  • Long combination vehicles (LCV) (i.e. Triple Trailers, Rocky Mountain Doubles, and Turnpike Doubles) are operated in the states of AZ, CO, FL, ID, IN, KS, MT, ND, NV, OH, OK, OR, SD and UT. LCV Drivers in these states must meet the Long Combination Vehicles (LCV) Qualification and Certification Minimum Standards
  • Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds several times a week.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck
  • Ability to follow instructions and complete required training
  • Ability to work independently and/or as a team member
WORKING CONDITIONS

Drive throughout shift on all types of roads and in all types of weather

Exposure to noise and vibration

Exposure to dust and diesel fumes

Exposure to hazardous materials shipped and packaged under DOT regulations

Hours may vary due to operational need

PAY

$33.92 - $39.26 per hour; if assigned linehaul duties, Mileage Pay Range: per mile, plus fixed pay for certain linehaul-related tasks equal to a fraction of the hourly rate (3/4, 1/2, 1/4), not based on time taken.
