Driver/Custodian

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Corps Officers, drives Salvation Army owned vehicle loading and unloading routine pickups and/or deliveries of material, donated or otherwise, to serve general operation of corps.

Driving Responsibilities (30%):

  1. Drives Salvation Army truck along scheduled route to pick-up donations and/or delivery merchandise to customers.
  2. Reviews scheduled pick-ups to ensure they are scheduled for the correct day of the week and geographical location.
  3. Organizes scheduled pick-ups by most direct routes to save time and fuel consumption.
  4. Drives to the dump and metal recycling center to dispose of non-useable donations and other trash items.
  5. Drives carefully and observes/complies with all traffic signs and road/weather conditions to ensure the safety of passengers.
  6. Parks vehicle in a safe and clearly marked parking space.
  7. Locks vehicle doors when vehicle is not in use.
  8. Arrives at destination according to schedule or telephones ahead when severe delays occur.
  9. Lifts and stacks donations in the truck; unloads/loads the truck.
  10. Prepares donation receipts for customers; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.
  11. Maintains good relationships with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
  12. Places and arranges furniture, appliances, books or other heavy items in the store as directed.
  13. Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures; explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted.

Facilities Cleaning Responsibilities (60%):

  1. Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms; cleans sinks and toilets, polishes mirrors, and replenishes supplies.
  2. Sweeps, vacuums, mops floors; sweeps sidewalks.
  3. Cleans windows, dusts and polishes furniture and fixtures.
  4. Empty trash cans regularly; collects trash from grounds and cleans trash cans.
  5. Moves office furniture including chairs, desks, tables, etc.
  6. Assists in setting up meeting rooms, sets up table and chairs.

Vehicle Maintenance Responsibilities (10%):

  1. Ensures the truck meets the scheduled maintenance and performs operator’s maintenance in accordance with established standards.
  2. Fuels vehicle in accordance with state gasoline regulations and The Salvation Army standards.
  3. Logs all mileage on standard forms; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.

Other Responsibilities:

  1. Assists in cleaning the loading dock area.
  2. Picks up trash and debris surrounding the grounds as requested.
  3. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of the assigned geographical area.
  2. Ability to organize pick-up tickets and to schedule routes in a manner that saves time and gasoline consumption.
  3. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
  4. Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation Army.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience: High school diploma or G.E.D, And prior experience driving a box truck, And any equivalent combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certifications: Valid State Drivers License

Physical Requirements: Ability to meet attendance requirements. Ability to read, write and communicate the English language effectively. Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions. Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing. Ability to drive a box truck safely and in compliance with laws, policies, and regulations. Duties require frequent periods of physical mobility including but not limited to standing, walking, climbing, bending, squatting, and lifting. Physical duties may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of sitting. Extensive amount of physical effort required associated with lifting, moving, and carrying heavy objects (more than 50 lbs.) frequently.

Working Conditions: Work requires driving a vehicle daily with exposure to the outdoors where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
