FedEx Freight in Santa Clara, CA is hiring for a tractor-trailer operation role. The position trains and develops driving skills for safe operation of tractor-trailer combinations, with non-driving duties like forklift and dock work.

Qualifications

• Must possess a class A CDL or a commercial learning permit (CLP) prior to entering job classification.
• Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards.
• Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under FMC regulations 391.
• Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
• Basic written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to lift/carry up to 100 pounds, several times a day.

Responsibilities

• Operate tractor-trailer, including doubles and/or straight trucks.
• Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment.
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer.
• Handle freight using motorized and manual equipment (forklift, pallet jack, hand truck).
• Secure freight inside trailers with pallets, straps, and rope.
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary.
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
• Collect checks for freight charges and maintain related documentation.
• Comply with hazmat regulations and placarding as required.
• Communicate with Dispatch on delays, arrivals, or equipment problems.
• Provide internal and external customer service; assess pick-up/delivery needs with customers.
• Suggest additional business leads to sales where appropriate.
• Where needed, perform duties of road driver or freight handler.
• Chain vehicle tires as required.
• Adhere to laws, regulations, and company policies.

• Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs
• Ask customers for additional business, and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities
• Where operationally necessary, perform job duties of a road driver or freight handler
• Chain vehicle tires, as required
• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
• Perform other duties as required

• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member
• WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Drive day and night on all types of roads in all types of weather
• Exposure to noise and vibration

• Exposure to hazardous materials shipped and packaged under DOT regulations
• Hours may vary due to operational need
