Job summary

FedEx Freight, Inc. in California seeks a tractor-trailer operator with CDL to perform drayage, dock duties, and freight handling. You will conduct safety inspections, hook/unhook trailers, and secure cargo while coordinating with Dispatch on delays and deliveries.

Requirements include a valid Class A license (or CLP), clean MVR, and DOT compliance. This role demands physical effort and the ability to work independently or in a team. Pay ranges from $26.84 to $31.97 per hour.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Operate tractor-trailer, including doubles/straight trucks.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections on equipment.
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies.
• Handle freight with motorized/manual equipment (forklift, pallet jack).
• Secure freight inside trailers with pallets, straps, and rope.
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary.
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
• Collect checks for freight charges and maintain documentation.
• Comply with hazmat regs and placarding as required.
• Communicate with Dispatch about delays, arrivals, equipment issues.
• Demonstrate internal and external customer service.
• Coordinate with customers for pick-up/delivery needs.
• Ask customers for additional business and provide leads to sales.
• Occasionally perform road driver or freight handler duties.
• Chain vehicle tires as required.
• Follow all laws, regs, and company policies.
• Perform other duties as required.

Starting Rate of Pay: $ 26.84 per hour

POSITION OVERVIEW

Through education and driving skills development, become proficient in the operation of a tractor trailer combination. Responsibilities include non-driving duties such as forklift operation and working the dock.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles and/or straight trucks
• Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer
• Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including, but not limited to, forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck
• Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies, including, but not limited to, pallets, straps, and rope
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports
• Collect checks for freight charges and maintain related documentation, as required
• Comply with hazardous material regulations and company procedures, and confirm placarding matches hazmat shipments, as required
• Communicate with and follow Dispatch instructions regarding events including, but not limited to, delays, arrivals, equipment problems, etc., as required
• Demonstrate internal and external customer service
• Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs
• Ask customers for additional business, and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities
• Where operationally necessary, perform job duties of a road driver or freight handler
• Chain vehicle tires, as required
• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
• Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must possess a class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a commercial learning permit (CLP) prior to entering job classification
• Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards
• Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations
• Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator
• Basic written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to hook up and break down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of approximately 100 pounds, several times a day
• Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds, several times a week
• Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck
• Ability to follow instructions and complete required training
• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Drive day and night on all types of roads in all types of weather
• Exposure to noise and vibration
• Exposure to dust and diesel fumes
• Exposure to hazardous materials shipped and packaged under DOT regulations
• Hours may vary due to operational need
