Job summary

FedEx Freight, Inc. in North Canton, OH is seeking qualified drivers to operate tractor-trailer combinations and perform dock duties. The starting rate is $25.64 per hour.

The role emphasizes safety, inspections, and reliable freight handling on a fast-paced, customer-focused network. You will conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections, hook and unhook trailers, load and secure freight with pallets and straps, and coordinate with Dispatch.

Qualifications

• Must possess a Class A CDL or CLP before entering job classification.
• Must have acceptable MVR based on hiring standards.
• DOT regulatory requirements under 49 CFR Part 391.
• Able to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
• Basic written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to lift up to 100 pounds and operate forklift/pallet jack safely.
• Ability to sit for extended periods and work independently or as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Operate tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles/straight trucks.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections on equipment.
• Hook/unhook trailers and convertor dollies to/from tractors.
• Handle freight using motorized/manual equipment (forklift, pallet jack, hand truck).
• Secure freight inside trailers with pallets, straps, rope.
• Recoup/repair damaged freight as needed.
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
• Collect checks for freight charges and maintain related docs.
• Comply with hazmat regulations and placarding alignment.
• Communicate with Dispatch on delays, arrivals, equipment issues.
• Provide internal/external customer service and determine pick-up/delivery needs.
• Offer leads to sales for potential new opportunities.
• Where needed, perform road driver or freight handler duties.
• Chain vehicle tires; comply with laws and company policies.

Starting Rate of Pay: $ 25.64 per hour

POSITION OVERVIEW

Through education and driving skills development, become proficient in the operation of a tractor trailer combination. Responsibilities include non-driving duties such as forklift operation and working the dock.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles and/or straight trucks
• Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer
• Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including, but not limited to, forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck
• Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies, including, but not limited to, pallets, straps, and rope
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports
• Collect checks for freight charges and maintain related documentation, as required
• Comply with hazardous material regulations and company procedures, and confirm placarding matches hazmat shipments, as required
• Communicate with and follow Dispatch instructions regarding events including, but not limited to, delays, arrivals, equipment problems, etc., as required
• Demonstrate internal and external customer service
• Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs
• Ask customers for additional business, and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities
• Where operationally necessary, perform job duties of a road driver or freight handler
• Chain vehicle tires, as required
• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
• Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must possess a class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a commercial learning permit (CLP) prior to entering job classification

• Ability to hook up and break down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of approximately 100 pounds, several times a day
• Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds, several times a week
• Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck
• Ability to follow instructions and complete required training
• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Drive day and night on all types of roads in all types of weather
• Exposure to noise and vibration
• Exposure to dust and diesel fumes
• Exposure to hazardous materials shipped and packaged under DOT regulations
• Hours may vary due to operational need
