Job summary

FedEx Freight, Inc is seeking an individual to operate tractor-trailers (including doubles) and perform non-driving duties such as forklift operation and dock work. Starting rate of pay is $25.64 per hour.

Responsibilities include pre-trip/post-trip inspections, hooking trailers, freight handling, securing loads, and completing reports. A valid Class A CDL or CLP is required, along with MVR and DOT regulatory compliance; lifting up to 100 pounds is expected.

Qualifications

• Must possess a class A CDL or CLP prior to entering job classification.
• Must possess acceptable MVR based on hiring standards.
• Must meet all DOT regulatory requirements under 391 FMC regulations.
• Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
• Basic written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to lift/carry up to 100 pounds several times a day.
• Ability to sit for extended periods and follow instructions.
• Ability to work independently or as a team member.

• Secure freight inside trailers with pallets, straps, and rope.
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary.
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
• Communicate with Dispatch regarding delays, arrivals, or problems.
• Coordinate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs.
• Where necessary, perform duties of road driver or freight handler.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Through education and driving skills development, become proficient in the operation of a tractor trailer combination. Responsibilities include non-driving duties such as forklift operation and working the dock.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles and/or straight trucks
• Perform pre-trip, post-trip, and inter-trip safety inspections on equipment
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer
• Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment, including, but not limited to, forklift, pallet jack, and hand truck
• Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies, including, but not limited to, pallets, straps, and rope
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports
• Collect checks for freight charges and maintain related documentation, as required
• Comply with hazardous material regulations and company procedures, and confirm placarding matches hazmat shipments, as required
• Communicate with and follow Dispatch instructions regarding events including, but not limited to, delays, arrivals, equipment problems, etc., as required
• Demonstrate internal and external customer service
• Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs
• Ask customers for additional business, and provide leads to sales for potential new opportunities
• Where operationally necessary, perform job duties of a road driver or freight handler
• Chain vehicle tires, as required
• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures
• Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to hook up and break down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of approximately 100 pounds, several times a day
• Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds, several times a week
• Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck
• Ability to follow instructions and complete required training
• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Drive day and night on all types of roads in all types of weather
• Exposure to noise and vibration
• Exposure to dust and diesel fumes
• Exposure to hazardous materials shipped and packaged under DOT regulations
• Hours may vary due to operational need

Pay:

Hourly: $25.64 - $30.55
