Job summary

ITG Communications, LLC in Columbia, SC, is seeking a Drill Operator to run horizontal directional drilling equipment for conduit, fiber, or utility installations. You will read prints, locate utilities, and ensure accurate bore paths in varying conditions.

The role requires 1–3 years of HDD experience, a valid driver's license (CDL preferred), and familiarity with Ditch Witch or Vermeer equipment. You will perform pre/post inspections, maintain records, and follow safety procedures.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Set up equipment with field crews; mix drilling fluid and pull conduit.

• Follow safety procedures and regulatory requirements.
• Assist with potholing, trenching, or related tasks as needed.
• Work outdoors in varied terrain and weather while staying productive.

Purpose

Job Description

The Drill Operator is responsible for operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to install conduit, fiber, or utility infrastructure as part of construction projects. This position requires a strong knowledge of underground construction techniques and the ability to work safely and efficiently in diverse environments.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

• Operate drilling rigs and support equipment to install underground utilities according to project specifications
• Read and interpret construction prints, locate utilities, and mark underground services accurately
• Perform pre- and post-trip inspections and basic equipment maintenance
• Ensure proper placement of conduit using bore logs and tracking systems
• Collaborate with field crews to set up equipment, mix drilling fluid, and pull back conduit or pipe
• Maintain accurate records of bore lengths, depths, and site conditions
• Adhere to all company and regulatory safety procedures and requirements
• Assist with potholing, locating, trenching, or other duties as assigned by supervisor
• Work in various terrain and weather conditions while maintaining productivity and quality

Requirements

Education

High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Experience

• 1–3 years of directional drilling experience or equivalent training
• Familiarity with Ditch Witch or Vermeer HDD equipment a plus
• Ability to read construction plans and understand underground utility locates
• Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred

Exposure

• Internal: Works closely with field crews, foremen, and project managers
• External: May interact with utility inspectors, subcontractors, and site contacts
• Frequent work outdoors in varied weather and job site conditions

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, and lift up to 75 lbs regularly
• Manual dexterity to operate drilling controls and hand tools
• Visual acuity for operating and monitoring bore path and tracking systems
• Tolerance for working around noise, dust, and heavy equipment
