Job description

Round Mountain is an open‑pit mine located in Nevada, one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world. The mine uses conventional open‑pit mining methods and processes ore by mill and heap leach. Kinross began operating the mine in 2003, and it has since become a continuous improvement leader in the Company’s portfolio. Round Mountain poured its 15 millionth ounce in 2018. Round Mountain and the nearby Bald Mountain mine make up Kinross’ Nevada operations.

The Round Mountain mine is an important contributor to the Nye County economy and, working with local stakeholders, has helped achieve significant improvements in healthcare and education in the area.

Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Mine General Foreman, the Drill & Blast Supervisor is responsible for directing drilling and blasting activities to ensure the mine has an adequate amount and proper balance of ore and waste while continuously aligning daily functions to reflect Kinross’ values. The incumbent may also be responsible for directing the mining activities in the absence of the Mine General Foreman.

Essential Functions
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures including, but not limited to safety, environmental, confidentiality and code of conduct.
  • Implement and maintain the current drill and blast plans. Oversees the design of blast patterns and the timing of blasts.
  • Ensures safe evacuation and clearing of blast zones during shot activities.
  • Coordinate with the Mine Dispatch/Maintenance Supervisors for all maintenance activities. Optimize the schedule so that the production impact is minimized.
  • Keeps required product tracking records complete and current.
  • Establish and maintain cost effective and productive drill & blast methods.
  • Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in all work areas to provide a safe and healthy work environment for all employees and contractors.
  • Provide training to all personnel in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Assign tasks associated with open pit drilling and blasting activities to drill and blast technicians or contractors. Monitor those tasks to ensure safe and efficient work execution.
  • Spend significant time in the field, “visible felt leadership”, interacting with the workforce.
  • Attend planning meetings to communicate current drill and blast plans and strategies.
  • Meets or exceeds established performance expectations set by management.
  • Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in job performance.
  • Works without risk or harm to self and others.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance required.
  • Helps develop other department personnel to perform duties listed above.

Qualifications And Skill Requirements
  • Must have a strong understanding of drilling and blasting equipment, materials and procedures.
  • Strong technical knowledge of drilling and blasting products and practices, including safety is required.
  • Must be able to lead employees toward achieving individual, team, and company goals, while maintaining a positive environment within the department.
  • Five years of open pit mining experience required.
  • Minimum one years of drill/blast field experience required.
  • Two years’ supervisory experience in a mining environment is desired.
  • Must be able to obtain ATF clearance and licensing.
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions; extreme heat and cold.
  • The ability to help develop and achieve the drill and blast, and mining plans is preferred.
  • Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • General understanding of mining operations, as well as limited understanding of leaching and maintenance operations.
  • Working knowledge and skill with P.C. utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation software, and preferred knowledge with JD Edwards Oracle systems.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability to work independently and also as a member of the management team.
  • Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational and technical writing skills.
  • Must be 18 years old and presently authorized to work in the United States on a full time basis.
  • Requires valid driver’s license.
